76th Independence Day Commemoration at PT Freeport Indonesia

17 August 2021

Every year on 17 August, the people of Indonesia celebrate the nation’s Independence Day with a commemorative event to raise the flag in honor of the heroes who successfully fought for independence.

Similarly, today (17/8) in Tembagapura, Timika, Papua, PT Freeport Indonesia held a ceremonial event to commemorate the 76th anniversary of Republic of Indonesia’s Independence. The number of people physically attending the ceremony was limited, given the covid-19 pandemic situation.  But those physically not in attendance were able to witness the ceremony by virtual means.

The ceremony commenced at 7:55 am local time. The red-and-white national flag was hoisted by a formation of 9 individuals, 3 of whom approached the ceremony inspector’s podium to receive the flag. The ceremony was personally led by PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas accompanied by representatives from the company’s 18 divisions.

The event was witnessed virtually by all PT Freeport Indonesia employees. In the last 2 years, Independence Day commemoration has had to be held with limited personal attendance and witnessed virtually in consequence of the covid-19 pandemic that is yet to end.
