After Retiring, Yuliue Uwe Feels Abandoned, But Freeport "Pick Up" the Black Pearl Again to Keep It Shining

29 September 2021

Since retiring in 1995, Yulius has lost everything. He even forget that he had made history in the world of Indonesian sport. Even though his life is for sport, but for the sake of food and hopes for a better future, Yulius joined with Democrat Party. In 2016, PT Freeport Indonesia, a gold and copper mining in Mimika, Papua pick up again the black pearl that had long been submerged in the mud.

"With the presence of special stadium for athletic athletes, this is a motivation on how to give the best, so in the future there will be a new legend athletes from Papua in the international events," said Yulius Uwe. He compared with MSC facilities that are very complete and luxurious. "Back on my era the facilities were not good, we were very disturbed during practice, all of them did nkt exist, gradually from the regional, national, and international levels. But in Papua in 2016 we can see an extraordinary facility," he said. Under Freeport's attention, Yulius feels compelled to train Papuan generation to pursue the atletic world.

"Moreover, I was the first Papuan who burn the torch, that weighs on my mind. The torch symbolizes light for others. So with Freeport's trust, it becomes a burden for me to create achievements for the Papuan generation," he said. Yulius was here to train Papuan children' abilities, which he judged to be still lacking in achievement.

"I want Papuan children to be succesfull. In here I again train my skills, not only in one field but 10 athletic match fields. I decide to give everything I got to coaches so they can be succeed. For the example, before I come here in 2016 at Bandung Stadium handled the javelin throwing athletes because they practiced for more than 4 years, they only managed 30 meters, I conveyed it to the coach, I finally managed to only go up 43 meters, in 2017 he went to Jayapura, he won," he said. Yulius admits that as the person in charge of achievement there are two systems that he applies, such as the basic coaching of the championship towards achievement with the person in charge of achievement. Therefore, in facing events, the two systems must be stable.

Facing National Sports Week (PON), he admitted, was quite difficult because there was no guarantee from the beginning of preparation, including transportation problems. The government does not yet have a system in preparing athletes for future achievements. "For PON, I can only make sure that we are superior in the men's javelin," he said. On the other hand, the mental training of today's children is different from the past. Currently, children want to practice if there are facilities and funds. Although in terms of supporting factors, the Papuan generation is very potential.

Papua Nature Has Formed Strong Human Character

Papua nature which consists of steep mountain stretches, rivers, mud, and wide beaches forms a strong human character. "Because in Papua you can attract athletes according to regional characteristics. If you come from the island, the islanders are strong, if the coast plays in sand or mud, so strong legs can jump high. If in the mountains, they are strong in the upper body like holding a spear. this is dealing with equipment, it must be adapted to the character as well. There are 4 characters that I have projected, all through rivers, trees, naturally the muscles are formed, we just need to direct them, "he said. He gave an example, the Kamoro peopld have potential but have difficulty in supporting aspects. "Now if you want to be an athlete, you have to have money, then you can practice. Until the children have shoes, they have to buy them. If we take athletes from the villages, they have talent, we have to give them food and so on," he explained.

Want to Restore the Glory of Papuan Athletes

After being entrusted by Freeport to be the coach of achievement at MSC, Yulius admitted that he would fight to bring back Papuan athletes who used to be victorious and successful even to the international world. "Through this MSC I want to re-elect them with various experiences and achievements that I get. Because indeed if other coaches change it slowly, in my hands it will change quickly," said Yulius confidently. He also hopes that in the future the trainers can open themselves up so that they can complement each other. "Now I'm focusing on redeeming this place, because we can't express our gratitude to Freeport, it can only be through achievements, not just words," he concluded. Four things he emphasizes for athletes are hard work, discipline, dedication, and sacrifice. "For athletes to gain achievements, they must have these four things. Our problem now lies in the athletes themselves, because there is no hard work, the influence of friends, only money thoughts, like staying up late, it's difficult. But if you really have confidence as an athlete, if these 4 mottos are applied, they will automatically be successful," he explained. (Stefanus udder)
