Jayapura, 14 October 2024 –PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Director & Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development, Claus Wamafma reiterated Freeport’s commitment to manifesting sustainable mining. This was conveyed during the 15th National Convention of the Indonesian International Relations Association (AIHII) that was held in Jayapura, from 8 to 11 October.
“Freeport Indonesia has become a world-class integrated upstream-to-downstream mining company. With the commencement of production at its new smelter, PTFI will be conducting a holistic undertaking in the country consisting of the mining and processing of ore and the refining of the processed ore into the copper cathode,” Claus stated before an audience of academicians from 45 universities across Indonesia.
Claus divulged, that with production commencing at the new PTFI smelter, Indonesia is predicted to be among the 5 biggest producers of copper cathode in the world.
The combined production of copper cathode production in Indonesia from PTFI and Amman Mineral will amount to a total of 1.5 million tons per year. PTFI itself will produce 1 million tons of copper cathode, in addition to 500 thousand tons produced by Amman Mineral.
"This will make Indonesia a key player in the global supply of copper, at a time when demand for copper is predicted to continue rising,” Claus said.
With PTFI’s operation conducted in an integrated manner upstream to downstream, PTFI will be even more committed to conducting sustainable mining, by promoting and upholding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in the running of its mining operation.
Claus conveyed, with the implementation of ESG principles, PTFI is manifesting a commitment to reducing its carbon emission by 30 percent by 2030, among others through the operation of an electric railway in its underground mines and planting mangroves on 100 hectares of land per year.
He continued, in the social aspect, PTFI conducts education programs, including through the provision of a scholarship program, the building of schools, and providing training for teachers. In the area of health, among others, it provides free healthcare services for seven indigenous tribal communities in Papua. In the area of economic development, PTFI supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by affording them closer access to markets and providing them with training to acquire skills to boost their enterprises. In the area of infrastructure, the company participates in the development of roads bridges, and other public facilities, to provide ease of mobility for residents near its mining operation site.
“PTFI also routinely collaborates with the local government through partnership programs aimed at reducing the population’s economic dependence on the company from a previous 90 percent of Mimika’s GRDP to 70 percent, signifying growth of other industries among the population, thereby indirectly lowering the degree of reliance on PTFI,” Claus related.
