Commemorating World Ozone Day 2022, Freeport and Mimika Students Plant Tree in Ajkwa Deposition Area

26 September 2022

In the framework of commemorating World Ozone Day which fell on September 16th, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) through its Environmental Division held a planting ceremony of 500 coconut plant seeds in the Modified Ajkwa Deposition Area (ModADA) at Mile Point 39 PTFI covering an area of 5 hectares.

The planting activity carried the theme “Protecting the Earth to Sustain World’s Habitats”, by green actions like tree planting and which was participated by tens –f students from the Amamapare Timika Politechnic Faculty of the Timika University and Economic High School (STIE) Jambatan Bulan.

Act Manager Envirommental Central System and Project Division Environmental PTFI, Pratita Puradyatmika, in his address during the program said he had selected to plant coconut trees because after previously different species of planting activities at the same location were burnt down by crossing gold prospectors. “We selected the coconut tree because it will one day grow coconuts which come to use to land crossers looking for water to drink and would then just have to pluck them. They would think twice to burn these trees down,” he said.

According to Pratitia the greening activity we are initiating here is not only ceremonial but a moment in time to change life styles. “In case your vision of life is not environmentally friendly, let this be the moment to become a life style changer. Pass it on to your children, relatives and anybody else in your community with whom you can together protect the environment,” he said.

In the meantime, STIE JAMBATAN BULAN Timika student, Nhila Sagita Abdul Mutalib admits his pleasure to be part of this activity because besides having the chance to visit the PTFI area he could be the same time be actively involved in the tree planting activity.

“This is a very useful activity which is the first time for me to participate in.  This wonderful idea should be continuously carried out in the future to protect the earth and I feel it’s my responsibility to call on other people in my surroundings to do the same to protect the earth by planting trees, “the economic student of the year 2020 said.

A similar opinion was made by Aprianto, a student with the Amamapura Mining Polytechnic University year of 2022. According to him it is through this activity that he began to fall in love with the environment especially the effort to protect the ozone layer.

“It was extremely interesting for me to take part in this activity and frankly speaking this is the first time I joined in such a program. After this I will tell my family, neighbours, and student friends about my experience and to call on them to make efforts to protect and preserve the environment. A big ThankYou to PTFI from me to bring on such an activity. It is my sincere hope that PTFI will also carry out such an intense activity for students in the Mimika Regency,” Aprianto said. Following the coconut tree planting activity, some entertainment was held including games with attractive door prizes.
