Deputy Minister Giring Tastes Amungme Gold Coffee, Appreciates Freeport's Efforts to Support Papua Coffee Becoming Popular

28 May 2025

Timika, May 28, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) efforts in developing Mimika's creative economy through the Amungme Gold Coffee business received appreciation from Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Culture, Giring Ganesha Djumaryo, during the Timika Inside Festival of Art (TIFA) 2025 event, held at the Eme Neme Yauware Building, Mimika Regency, on May 22-24, 2025.

"As a coffee lover like myself, the taste and aroma of this Amungme Gold arabica coffee is extraordinary, with cool appearance and packaging. Thank you Freeport Indonesia for supporting our brothers and sisters in Papua to build the Amungme Gold Coffee brand," said Giring when visiting PTFI's exhibition booth at TIFA 2025, Saturday (5/24).

After tasting a cup of Amungme Gold arabica coffee, Giring invited people from outside Papua who visit Mimika to enjoy this local coffee product from Mimika's highlands and make it a typical Mimika souvenir.

Throughout TIFA 2025, one of the most visited exhibition booths was PTFI's Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) booth, which featured various fostered products such as chicken eggs from the poultry farming program, various processed sago products from the plantation program, processed salted fish and fish floss products from the fisheries program, and Amungme Gold coffee beans. The coffee beans that were ground and brewed directly by baristas appeared to be swarmed by visitors. Various coffee variants served included black coffee, palm sugar milk coffee, latte, and cappuccino.

PTFI's Senior Vice President (SVP) of Sustainable Development Nathan Kum said that coffee cultivation by the Amungme tribal community is PTFI's initiative through the Highland Agriculture Development (HAD) program that has been running since 1998. Coffee is planted in the highlands inhabited by the Amungme tribal community. The total area of coffee plantation land currently reaches about 193 hectares with 80 farmers.

"It is a special pride for Freeport Indonesia that community empowerment efforts through coffee plant cultivation have received positive appreciation from Deputy Minister Giring. We remain committed to introducing Papua coffee so that it becomes more widely known to Indonesian society, one of which is through TIFA 2025," he said.

Nathan said PTFI brings Amungme Gold Coffee to various festivals and UMKM exhibitions in Papua and Jakarta. This coffee is also always present to support various national and international activities. Not only to introduce Papua coffee, but also to bring coffee enthusiasts closer to one of the best coffee variants from Papua's mountains.

"TIFA 2025 is a very strategic venue to introduce Amungme Gold Coffee. We are proud that we have always been able to support TIFA events, which serve as a positive space to introduce local arts, culture, and creative businesses," said Nathan.

The TIFA festival itself is an annual agenda that has been held regularly since 2019 and serves as a space of expression for Papua's cultural artists and local creative business practitioners. This festival combines traditional and contemporary art performances with UMKM product promotion, making it an important venue for cultural preservation and community economic strengthening.

"Through Freeport Indonesia's active involvement in TIFA since 2023, and various other cultural preservation programs, PTFI hopes to continue strengthening synergy with the Mimika community in maintaining cultural identity and building an inclusive and sustainable economic future," said Nathan.

Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob, who was present at the opening, expressed appreciation to the organizing committee and contributions from sponsors including PTFI, which has a commitment to provide support to local farmers and breeders to produce various products that are fostered from the beginning until ready to be marketed. PTFI's exhibition booth became one of the main attractions for visitors, after displaying products from plantations, agriculture, and livestock from PTFI's fostered communities.
