30 Hectares of Coconut Plantation

DEVELOPMENT - based rural in some areas re-mobilized to strengthen the foundations of the country's economy, to accelerate poverty reduction and the reduction of the development gap between regions, as well as solutions for social change in the village. In reality, rural development allows the sources of economic growth directed towards the countryside so that it becomes an attractive place as a place to live and make a living. One of the economic development that is being planned by PTFI to society southern coastal area Mimika one of which is a coconut plantation. Coconut is one of the strategic commodities because of the crucial roles for the community, among others as food, sources of income and a source of industrial raw materials.

38 villages along the southern coast of Mimika has potential in the development of palm plantations as non-fishing income. Palm plantations deemed appropriate to be developed in this area in addition to coconut plantations are well known and have been entrenched, maintenance is also easy. The period is too long, and has great potential to be marketed both locally and regionally.

Palm plantations are being prepared by PTFI through department SLD (Social Local Development) as the initial phase will focus on the village Atuka, Omawita - Fanamo (Manasari) and Otakwa. By taking the local seed from the village Atuka. Source of coconut seedlings originating from Kampung Atuka has been certified by the Center for Oil as a source of local superior coconut seedlings.

 

Coconut plantation program is in line with one of the Mimika regency administration programs that are running that increase crop production and food security through the development of palm plantations. From 2007 to 2014, through the Department of Agriculture and Plantation has developed more than 532 hectares of coconut plantation and 164 hectares (31%) of them have produced.

The purpose of the development of palm plantations was to build and strengthen the synergy of the company (PTFI) with the Local Government through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and strengthening of the partnership with TNI, Police, Church, Community Development Institute Amungme - Kamoro (LPMAK) in program development economic and community development.

In addition, another purpose of this is in support of government programs, especially in efforts to protect the resource potential through the development of coconut seedlings locally have been certified, and participate in developing long term economic potential through the development of commodity superior (coconut) which resulted in increased revenue community and as part of the economic empowerment of communities after PTFI mine.

Implementation of this palm plantation program will begin with the planting of palm seedlings in three villages on the south coast of Mimika namely Kampung Omawita, Fanamo and Otakwa, Mimika Timur District in late November 2015 (20-25 / 11). (Hendrikus).
