Gresik, 22 June 2024 – On Friday (21/6), Mother Vessel (MV) Unitama Lily transporting the first shipment of copper concentrate from Amamapare Port in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province docked at the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Smelter port in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE) special economic zone (KEK) in Gresik, East Java.
The vessel was carrying a total of 22,000 tons of copper concentrate, of which 10,000 tons will be refined in PTFI’s first smelter, namely PT Smelting, and 12,000 tons will make up the first supply of concentrate to the new PTFI smelter that is slated to begin operating in this month (June).
This supply of concentrate will be subsequently moved and stored in a Concentrate Barn prior to undergoing processing in the Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF). Overall, there are three processes concentrate undergoes before it transforms into copper cathode sheets: material handling, smelting in the Furnace, and refining in the Electro Refinery.
