Freeport and Partners Promote Smart Homes and Care for Children's Nutrition in Two Villages in Mimika

01 September 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) continues to be committed to making efforts to improve the quality of human resources (HR) for children on the coast of Mimika Regency, Papua. One of them is by promoting smart homes and caring for children's nutrition.

As was done in Kampung Tipuka and Kampung Ayuka, Mimika District Far East. This activity has been going on since 2018. To support this activity, Freeport collaborated with several parties, starting from the Mimika Regional Government, Military District Command (Koramil) 1710-07/Mapurujaya, Brigif Raider 20/3/Kostrad, Miktim Sector Police (Polsek), and other partners.

In smart homes, coaches from nearby schools provide tutoring for children from Early Childhood Education (PAUD), Elementary School (SD), and Junior High School (SMP) levels. Then proceed with providing additional nutrition to children. The smart house participants in Ayuka Village were attended by 112 children. Meanwhile, in Tipuka Village, 122 children participated.

The tutoring activities themselves do not interfere with students, because they are carried out after school. With a meeting time of two hours and divided into two sessions. "The purpose of the tutoring itself is to provide additional lessons that are carried out outside of school hours, so that they can gain additional knowledge, skills and insights and also help in shaping character, personality, mental, and spiritual," said Senior Leason Officer PT. FI Leo Tumuka in Timika, on Wednesday, 1st September 2021.

Meanwhile, to care for children's nutrition, PTFI through the Strategic Learning and Development (SLD)/Community Division routinely provides additional food assistance, in the form of boxed milk and biscuits. Where, this supplementary feeding activity has been going on since the tutoring was held. "In addition to boxed milk and biscuits, Freeport and its partners also provide additional food in the form of rice, side dishes, vegetables, green beans, boiled eggs, and others. The additional provision is carried out in various ways," he said.

There is progress for children's achievement through tutoring. This can be seen, for grade 6 SD in the 2020/2021 school year, the graduation rate reaches 100 percent. "This proves that this activity is very useful and continues to receive support from village heads, community leaders, and parents," he said. Meanwhile, Petrosina Madmuar, a teacher at the Ayuka Village Smart House who is also a teacher at the Ayuka Inpres Elementary School, said that this smart house aims to increase knowledge after returning home from school. Where, children are taught to be able to read, write, and count (3M).

"The spirit of the children is extraordinary, and the existence of a smart house really motivates children to study hard. It is proven that every Tuesday and Thursday the smart house is filled with children to study," he said, which was also agreed by Smart House builder Tipuka Rosita Desny Telehala.
