Freeport Assists BPBD Mimika in Distributing Relief Assistance to Nayaro Flood Victims

Timika, 31 Agustus 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) assisted Timika Regional Disaster Management Agency BPBD to distribute relief items in the form of foodstuffs to residents impacted by floods in Kampung Nayaro, Mimika Baru District, on Friday (30/8/2024).

“On behalf of the Mimika Regency government, BPBD acted swiftly to deliver relief items in the form of foodstuffs to residents in Kampung Nayaro who were impacted by floods. We appreciate the good cooperation and response from PTFI to jointly offer relief to our brothers and sisters in Kampung Nayaro who are facing difficulties,” Head of Mimika BPBD Mozes Yarangga said.

As reported, heavy rainfall in Kampung Nayaro on Wednesday (28/8) caused floodwater to enter the homes and gardens of residents and disrupt road and bridge access in local villages, leading 750 residents to suffer loss and damages as a result of this disaster. PTFI through its Community Affairs division provided assistance to the Mimika local government with transport facilitation to deliver foodstuffs to residents impacted by the disaster. This relief in the form of foodstuffs was immediately distributed through village administration representatives to residents.

“Kampung Nayaro is the closest in proximity to the PTFI lowland area, we assisted with buses to transport the foodstuffs relief to Nayaro today. PTFI will continue to carry out programs with Kampung Nayaro residents, such as supporting the Pustu or auxiliary community health center, assisting with road repairs to restore access, and assisting with other repair work needed by Nayaro residents,” PTFI Manger and Community Liaison Officer Marthinus Badii said.

Nayaro residents warmly welcomed the swift actions made by the government through BPBD together with PTFI. The foodstuffs relief from the government consisting of 100 sacks of rice, 100 boxes of instant noodles, 50 cartons of bottled mineral water, and 40 care packages containing staples and baby food was promptly presented to residents at the Kampung Nayaro Community Center, who were represented by delegates. “Thank you to the Mimika Regency government’s BPBD, who together with Freeport arrived here to see us and bring us food assistance. We are happy that PTFI is assisting us with repair work on roads and bridges that were damaged and are now being restored,” a Kampung Nayaro community figure, Mama Herman Apoka uttered.

In conducting operations in Mimika Regency areas, PTFI by way of its Community Affairs team consistently offers assistance and advocacy to sponsored villages near the company ‘s operating area, towards advancing together. On the recent occasion of celebration of the Republic of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day anniversary, PTFI carried out various activities with local communities, including community service actions in Kampung Nayaro, conducting a ceremony to commemorate Independence Day, and holding a Bargain Bazaar in collaboration with PRIMO Supermarket in Kampung Banti in Tembagapura District, as well as various contests and competition in which residents participated.
