Freeport Builds Two Suspension Bridges in Hoeya Mimika

18 June 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia since 2015 has built two units of a permanent suspension bridge in Hoeya District, Mimika Regency, Papua Province.

The Vice President for Community Development at PT Freeport Indonesia, Nathan Kum in Timika, on Friday, said that the two suspension bridges had been completed and handed over to the Hoeya District Government together with the village head and the local community to be used, protected and maintained.

The two suspension bridges are connecting Jinoni Village to Kulamaogom Village with a length of 140 meters, and the other connecting Dalmaogom Village to Mamotoga Village with a length of 150 meters.

The construction of the two steel suspension bridges cost around Rp. 8 billion. "As a partner of the government and the community in the development of Papua, especially around the company's operational areas, of course PT Freeport will continue to contribute to community and regional development in a sustainable manner while still paying attention to the cultural values of the local community," said Nathan.

That native son of the Amungme Tribe from Tsinga Village, Tembagapura District, said the construction of the two suspension bridges aimed to facilitate public access.

The bridge from Jinoni Village to Kulamaogom Village is an access for Hoeya and Tsinga residents who want to travel to Jila, Bela, Alama and the surrounding villages. While the Dalmaogom to Mamontoga Bridge connects two villages separated by the Jinogong River which is very wide and has a fast current.

"This bridge makes it easy for the people of the two villages to connect to the community service center, which are the district office and health facilities in Dalmaogom Village," Nathan said. Previously, the journey from Dalmaogom Village to Mamontoga Village had to be taken for hours on foot through steep mountains and across fast-flowing rivers.

"If we walk, we leave at 06.00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) in the morning, then we just arrive at the opposite village at 18.00 WIT. The school is only in Kulamaogom Village. Now walking from Jinoni Village to Kulamaogom only takes 30 minutes," he explained. The Hoeya Valley, located in the Mimika mountain area, is one of the service areas of the Community Relations Department of PT Freeport Indonesia and the Amungme Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK).

The residents of the Hoeya Valley are all Amungme people who have kinship with other Amungme people who live in Tsinga, Waa Banti and Aroanop. The Hoeya District consists of six villages, which are Puti Village (the village at the estuary), Jaba Village, Kulamaogom Village, Jinoni Village, Dalmaogom Village, and Mamontoga Village (the village at the head of the water/upstream).

Hoeya Valley itself is separated by the flow of the Hoeanogong River. Long before a permanent suspension bridge was built in the area, residents independently built bridges using improvised wood and had to hold on to several rattan sections above the fast-flowing Hoenogong River with a very high risk of accidents.
