Freeport Celebrates MIND ID 5th Anniversary With Social Work in Two Orphanages

10 November 2022

On Thursday, 10 November 2022, in celebrating the fifth anniversary of Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID), PT. Freeport Indonesia conducted social work activities at two institutions, Panti Asuhan Laskar Pelangi and Panti Asuhan Santa Susana. The theme of MIND ID Anniversary celebrations this year is 5 Years Of Solidarity.

PTFI VP of Community Development Nathan Kum says the company is deeply grateful for the opportunity to visit the two orphanages located in Mimika. He expressed the hope that residents of the orphanages will develop, absorb learning, and become children who will bring pride to Mimika Regency and the nation.

He also voiced appreciation for the founders and stewards of the orphanages caring for Mimika children, in particular Panti Asuhan Santa Susana, where 95 percent of the occupants are native Papuans. “Hopefully, what we are providing today will be of use and can be well maintained,” he said.

On the same occasion, the foundation Yayasan Santa Susana disclosed what was relay needed at this time is clean water supply. In response, Nathan said Freeport will endeavor to meet this need. “We cannot promise anything at this time, but ahead we will endeavor to provide this need, as water supply service from PDAM will soon be available,” Nathan said.

Panti Asuhan Santa Susana founder Magdalena Ema Nunang related the orphanage officially opened by the Mimika Regency government on 9 December 2022 was established by the foundation Yayasan Peduli Kasih Mimika, which was formed on 24 February 2018. "Since 2017, 82 children have entered this orphanage, and currently 44 reside here, including 23 boys and 21 girls, ranging in age from 9 months to 11 years,” she revealed.

37 of the children receive schooling, with the rest not yet of school age. Out of the total number of children residing in the orphanage, 37 are native Papuans. “We thank Freeport for its concern and care, and for making the necessary arrangements for almost one week. Congratulations to MIND ID, its management and all members, may their duties and responsibilities become a blessing for all,” she said.

MIND ID 5th Anniversary Celebrations Committee Head Tasya Worabai said the social work activity is grounded on a letter from MIND ID requesting the activity be held in orphanages. "We performed a survey and ultimately decided on Panti Asuhan Laskar Pelangi which is a Muslim institution, and Santa Susana, a Catholic orphanage,” she informed.

She said the assistance provided for Laskar Pelangi was based on their need for basic goods and foodstuffs such as chicken, beef, eggs, rice, and other items. Meanwhile assistance for Santa Susana supplied their need for bedding, foodstuffs, bathing equipment, school supplies and other items.

"We have carried out this activity since Monday, including anti-malaria spraying and inspection, and we have also provided information and instruction on malaria prevention and the proper way to wash hands, as well as living a healthy lifestyle,” she ended
