Gresik, January 6, 2026 — More than 700 residents in the area surrounding PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) Smelter operations have now been equipped with skills and nationally standardized industrial certification through the Competency-Based Training program.
"This training is PTFI's step in supporting the improvement of human resource quality around the operational area. The goal is to produce competent and certified workers ready to compete amid rapid industrial growth, while opening wider employment opportunities for the community," said Erika Silva, Vice President of External Affairs Smelter PTFI.
Certification, he continued, is an important capital so that the community has competitiveness and greater opportunities to enter the industrial sector. PTFI currently is offering eight types of training running from November 2025 to January 2026, involving 160 participants. These training types include PLC-based industrial electricity, scaffolding operator, general occupational health and safety (K3) expert, rigger, electrical K3 technician, crane operator, CNC milling operator, and forklift operator.
"All training programs are designed in accordance with the standards of the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia, as a continuation of human resource development efforts in Gresik," he said.
In addition to technical training, participants are also equipped with soft skills and understanding of occupational health and safety (K3) to meet increasingly stringent industry needs and standards. In its implementation, PTFI collaborates with the Gresik Regency Manpower Office and Rumah Vokasi to ensure program sustainability, including opening job placement access for training graduates.
One participant, Taufik Rohman from Bedanten Village, considers this program to provide real benefits. "This training adds to our knowledge and skills. With so many industries in Gresik, programs like this are very much needed so that people can compete and help reduce unemployment," said Taufik.
A similar sentiment was expressed by Hapsari, another training participant. "I gained a lot of knowledge, especially since many companies now require certification. This training is very useful because it provides understanding in fields relevant to industry. My hope is to be accepted in a company that matches my expertise," said Hapsari.
This effort aligns with PTFI's vision to support a conducive employment ecosystem in Gresik. "Collaboration between government, business, and the community is key to increasing workforce competitiveness. PTFI will continue to support human resource development in Gresik so they can contribute optimally to industrial growth," said Erika.
