Freeport Helps 50 Medical Oxygen Cylinders for RSMM Timika

30 July 2021

Mitra Masyarakat Hospital (RSMM), Timika, Papua receives 50 medical oxygen cylinders from PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) to help rescue the COVID-19 patients who are in critical condition. A representative from Supply Chain Management of PT Freeport Indonesia, Dani Hamdani while handover the assistance at the LIP Kuala Kencana, Friday, said the assistance was the second one after Freeport receive a permit from the Mimika Health Office related to the utilization or the conversion from concentrate oxygen cylinders into medical oxygen cylinders.

“The handover of medical oxygen from PTFI to RSMM is PTFI's commitment in helping the COVID-19 handling in Mimika. We handle the medical oxygen because this is a humanitarian duty,” said Dani Hamdani.

The handover was attended by the representative of the PT Freeport Indonesia management, Director of RSMM Timika, as well as Chairman of Caritas Timika Papua Foundation. Dani said the medical oxygen was produced by the Supply Chain Management of PTFI which has been used to produce oxygen gas for industrial purposes such as cutting iron plates and others.

“We introduced Mr. Yogi, he is the main operator of the oxygen cylinder manufacturer, this is not as easy as we make a coconut juice. The manufacture of medical oxygen requires precision, especially since we are still using old technology. There are dozens of stages that everyone must control so that they can produce medical oxygen," explained Dani.

The Supply Chain Management of PTFI claimed to be responsible for ensuring the continuity of raw materials for the continuous operation of the medical oxygen plant, including the time limit for procurement and cubication. The Director of RSMM, Dr. Jhoni Ribo Tandisau appreciated the assistance provided by PTFI. "Since July 2021, the RSMM has been very short of oxygen. The capacity to fill the tubes at the RSMM is only 18 tubes per day. Even though the demand during July is on average 50 to 60 tubes per day," said Jhoni.

Until now, the number of COVID-19 patients being treated at RSMM Timika has not decreased, so it requires a large supply of oxygen, especially if the number of patients with severe and critical conditions who require oxygen assistance is increasing. As of Thursday (29/7), RSMM treated 386 COVID-19 patients, 15 of them have died. On the other hand, he said, quite some employees of the YPMAK private hospital managed by YCTP have been infected by the COVID-19, and until now 38 people are still in self-isolation.

Chair of YCTP, DR Leonardus Tumuka is grateful that amid the critical situation and conditions experienced by RSMM Timika due to limited medical oxygen and various other facilities, Freeport still provides support and assistance, especially to save the lives of COVID-19 patients.
