Freeport Indonesia Boosting Mining Sector Sustainability, Earns 2 Accolades at Subroto Awards 2024

11 October 2024

Jakarta, 11 October 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) was honored with accolades at the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry’s Subroto Awards 2024, in acknowledgment of the company’s commitment and performance in implementing sustainable mining management and making positive contributions for communities.

PTFI earned the awards in two categories. The first category was for Safety, Engineering, and Environmental Protection. The second was for Most Innovative Community Development and Empowerment Performance by a Minerals Company. President Joko Widodo witnessed bestowal of awards by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia to 68 recipients, in Jakarta on Thursday (10/10).

“We are honored to receive two accolades in this Subroto Awards 2024. This achievement embodies Freeport Indonesia commitment to continue operating sustainably by promoting and upholding Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in the running of our mining operation,” PTFI Director & Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma stated on receiving the awards.

He said under its implementation of ESG principles, PTFI is committed to reducing carbon emission by 30 percent by 2030, through operation of an electric railway in its underground mines, and planting mangroves over an area of 100 hectares per year.

"Every year we make direct social investments for Papuan communities through development and empowerment programs conducted under a partnership scheme, for the seven indigenous tribes in Mimika,“ Claus said.

He added, PTFI built a clean water treatment facility to assist Timika City residents in gaining access to affordable clean water, and thereby increasing their quality of life. In the economic development area, PTFI sponsors and mentors around 200 small, micro, and medium businesses (UMKM) in Papua.

Meanwhile, PTFI Chief Mine Engineer Carl Tauran said receiving the award for Safety, Engineering, and Environmental Protection in the Subroto Awards 2024 event further increases the company’s commitment to implement safe mining practices.

"In the world of mining, the aspect of safety is of utmost importance. At Freeport Indonesia, we have in place a telematics-based system to conduct real-time monitoring of the movement and operation of vehicles, and we have a special team monitoring vehicle operation effectiveness while simultaneously promoting changing driving behavior,” Carl said.

This, he continued, serves to protect drivers and passengers against the risk of accidents, and to increase operating efficiency by cutting down the accident rate and vehicle downtime. PTFI is known to have a fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles operating on the PTFI mining site, consisting of light vehicles, buses, trucks, and heavy equipment. In 2023, on average 1,871 rode on transport vehicles on a daily basis to travel to and from the lowland area and the highland area, with this number increasing so far in 2024 to 1,960 per day. This highlights vehicle driving behavior as a primary contributor to the risk of vehicle-related accidents.

"As part of implementation of a Fatality Risk Management (FRM) program in 2017, PTFI conducted real time monitoring of driving speeds. This policy was not only beneficial in terms of safety, but also succeeded in bringing about behavioral changes for the better among employees driving vehicles, to transform from aggressive driver to defensive driver. This behavioral transformation drastically brought down the accident rate as well as the degree of accident severity,” Carl said.

The Subroto Awards is the highest honor conferred by the ESDM Ministry to stakeholders who have demonstrated best performance, as a reflection of the spirit embodied by Prof. Dr. Subroto. He was Minister of Mining and Energy for the 1978-1988, and made numerous, outstanding contributions to the advancement of the energy and mineral resources sector in Indonesia. In 2023 PTFI earned an award for Development of Human Resources Competence in the Energy and Mineral Resources Sector.
