Freeport Indonesia Committed to Developing Sports in Papua

04 January 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia is committed to continuing developing sports in Papua with the aim to produce new talents who are able to compete on a national and international scale. This was conveyed by PT Freeport Indonesia Director of External Affairs, Agung Laksamana, at the virtual launch of the Indonesia Basketball Festival in Jakarta on Tuesday. The Indonesia Basketball Festival is part in a series of events leading up to the FIBA Asia Cup from July 12-24 with the first series to take place in the Stadium of the Mimika Sports Complex in Timika, Papua from 7-11 January.

Agung further explained that PT Freeport Indonesia is ready to support the event because of its commitment to take an active role in the development of basketball talents primarily in Papua. "This event gives us an opportunity to optimize the use of the stadium that we have built at an expense of nearly IDR. 500 billion. Considering the high price we think we should optimize its use by keeping up a continuity of sports events to be held here. Let’s give basketball the honour to be the first sports branch to be played here hopefully with many others to follow suit,” Agung said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday.

PT Freeport Indonesia is also planning to launch similar competitive sports events here like athletics and soccer. “Our commitment to sports is not limited to basketball, but to develop other branches too like athletics and soccer. This is significant because there are many Papua talents still unexposed,”Agung said. “This venue is needed to expose East Indonesian athletes,” he added

He continues to say this Sports Complex was built by PT Freeport Indonesia to accommodate many sport branches indoors and outdoors. He also expressed the hope that the Indonesia Basketball Festival in Mimika has the ability to socialize this sport in Papua more widely. “There are also other things we want to build up, One of them is awareness, namely to give the branch of basketball more public awareness, The festival is an event to catch young Papuan talents who wish to make a name in basketball both on a national and international level,” said Agung. After Mimika, the festival will also tour four other big cities, namely in Bali, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.
