17 October 2024

Bogor, 17 Oktober 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia Director & Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma divulged that PTFI has in place a training program to impart soft skills, titled Papuan Sustainable Human Capital Development (PSHCD). Provision of such training is part of the company’s commitment to developing competent and competitive Papuans to ably meet the challenges of the working world.

“This year, training is delivered in three batches with a total of 114 young Papuans participating, of whom 80 percent are from the indigenous Amungme-Kamoro and five kindred tribes inhabiting Mimika Regency. The goal of this program is to increase the soft skills of participants, in alignment with the PT Freeport Indonesia values of SINCERE (Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect, Excellence), and to equip them well ahead of entering the working world,” Claus informed at a briefing for training participants during the closing of PSHCD training, in Bogor on Tuesday (15/10).

He said developing the soft skills of Papuans is crucial to ensure they are ready to enter the working world and to build excellent and competitive characters who are independent and possess self-discipline. “Discipline is key to achieving success, not just in business, but also in conducting personal lives. Discipline is critical upon entering the working world, it is immensely necessary and must be instilled early on,” he said.

Claus explained the soft skills training follows up on hard skills previously imparted at the Nemangkawi Mining Institute campus in Timika. The hard skills were obtained by participants while training to become mechanics, electricians, heavy equipment operators, welders, and other professionals. Meanwhile, the soft skills conveyed include self-discipline, character building, team building, leadership, nationalism, time management, entrepreneurship, communication, and so on.

Participants are also trained in national defense skills, with orientation provided by the National Narcotics Board BNN and National Counter Terrorism Agency BNPT. This training program which has been conducted on a regular basis since 2017 is organized by the Papuan Affairs Department in conjunction with Nemangkawi Mining Institute.

“Through the provision of a full range of hard skills and soft skills, participants are expected to be well equipped with knowledge, proficiency, and work attitude needed to engage in industry and business. These outstanding young Papuans are additionally expected to positively impact their families, work teams, and society in general in Papua,” he said.

A participant who was voted as Best PSCHD Participant, Alfred Edison communicated his happiness and enthusiasm in attending training. “I gained a great deal here, among others I acquired self-discipline, in terms of managing my time, improving my character, and actualizing the SINCERE core values. Going ahead, I hope the discipline instilled during training here will serve as a model for many others and will propel me to become a better employee,” Alfred said.

“With the completion of this training program course, Freeport Indonesia expects the young Papuans concerned to undergo a transformation of mindsets, attitudes, and actions in conducting their day-to-day lives, and to become more disciplined, more accomplished, and achieve their best for the advancement of the people and nation of Indonesia,” Claus stated.
