Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024 Successfully Held at Mimika Sport Complex

Timika, December 7, 2024 – The Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024 Regional Timika was successfully held at the Mimika Sport Complex (MSC), Mimika Regency, Central Papua, December 5-6. President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Tony Wenas, along with MIND ID Commissioner Grace Natalie, PTFI Commissioner Hinsa Siburian, and Head of Tourism, Youth, Culture, and Sports Department of Mimika Regency Elisabeth Cenawastin attended and encouraged the participants on the second day of matches, Friday (11/6).

"To all of you, let's compete in a sportsmanlike manner. You can compete and challenge each other, but you must maintain sportsmanship. Keep the family spirit among us all," Tony said to all players.

Indonesia Futsal Series is the largest student futsal league in Indonesia 2024, organized in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). The league runs from January to December 2024, participated by 1,000 high schools/vocational schools. The event takes place in 38 regions from Aceh to Jayapura, involving 16,000 athletes and watched by more than 11 million viewers across Indonesia. PSSI Chairman Erick Tohir stated that this Futsal Series is the largest tournament in the country.

Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024 Regional Timika was attended by 16 high school/vocational school participants in Timika. In the final match, SMK PK Hermon Futsal Team defeated SMAN 1 Mimika with a score of 4-0. Meanwhile, SMK Amamapare secured third place after drawing with SMK PK Hermon with a score of 2-2. With this victory, SMK PK Hermon will represent the Central Papua region at the Grand National Championship in Jakarta on December 10-11, 2024, which also serves as a talent scouting event for national athletes.

Social Investment in Sports

Director & EVP of Sustainable Development PTFI Claus Wamafma said Freeport Indonesia remains committed to supporting sports development and progress in Papua, one of which is through support in the Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024.

He said the Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024 serves as a platform for students in Timika to enter the professional competition ecosystem with the potential to become skillful football players. This league also has great potential to become a platform for developing productive human resources in the country, especially from Papua for Indonesia.

"PTFI's participation as one of the main sponsors in the Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024 aligns with the company's social investment commitment to provide social benefits for the community and participate in sustainable development," he said.

In the Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024, PTFI's support includes preparing the Mimika Sports Complex facility as a venue and providing flight tickets for champions from Timika, Jayapura, Makassar, Mataram, Denpasar, Surabaya, Pontianak, and Palembang to participate in the national competition in Jakarta.

Freeport Indonesia is certainly very proud that this national futsal competition is held at the Mimika Sports Complex. A stadium that we built to international standards to develop sports talents in Eastern Indonesia, especially Papua," said Claus.

He explained that Mimika Sports Complex was built with an investment value of 33 million US dollars or IDR 462 billion in 2014 and was prepared for the Papua PON athletics events. MSC stands on 12.5 hectares of land owned by the Mimika Regency Government.

MSC facilities include an International standard athletics field (World Athletics Class 2), training field, indoor stadium, and athlete dormitory with a capacity of 100 people. All these facilities are dedicated to Papua Athletic Center and Papua Football Academy activities.

SMK PK Hermon Futsal Team emerged as the first-place winner and earned the right to represent Central Papua in the national level competition in Jakarta, after defeating SMAN 1 Timika.

The Freeport Indonesia Futsal Series 2024 Region Timika matches were participated by 16 high schools/vocational schools in Mimika Regency.
