Timika, June 22, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) invites the public of Mimika, Central Papua, to take joint action to stop plastic pollution or "Beat Plastic Pollution" as a concrete step in commemorating World Environment Day, which is observed every June 5th.
"We must start from ourselves in protecting the environment, especially stopping plastic pollution. We must be able to become role models, examples in reducing plastic waste. If we want to commit, we can definitely do it," said PTFI Vice President Environmental Gesang Setyadi in Timika on Sunday.
He said the joint action of thousands of Mimika residents in stopping plastic pollution was successful, as evidenced by the enthusiasm of all Mimika residents in participating in various educational and participatory activities throughout May and June.
"The goal is for all parties to better understand our responsibility to protect the environment, especially stopping plastic pollution which is increasingly concerning," he said.
Various activities organized by PTFI included radio outreach about efforts to reduce and sort waste in Timika, mangrove planting at Tipuka Estuary, Grasberg Reforestation, SpoGomi (trash picking competition), Segregation Waste Bin Design Contest, Berlian Fun Run "Act to Protect the Environment," River Cleanup Action in Timika, Clean Village Competition, and the selection of Environmental Ambassador 2025, Environmental Exhibition 2025 showcasing various green initiatives. There was also an entertainment stage featuring DJ Dimas and artist Justy Aldryn that enlivened the spirit of environmental love, especially among the younger generation.
Gesang said these activities were realized through strong collaboration with the Mimika Regency Government and its various agencies, active involvement of students (elementary, junior high, senior high school), university students, community organizations, environmental care groups, health centers, districts, and PTFI employees.
"On behalf of PTFI Management, we express our highest appreciation to the Mimika Regency Government, especially the Environmental Agency, which has long been a strategic partner in collaborating on environmental management programs," said Gesang.
This, he continued, is a good example of how synergy between the private sector, government, and other stakeholders can collaborate and work together to address environmental problems.
Mimika Regional Secretary Assistant III Evert Hindom in his remarks expressed appreciation for PTFI's and all parties' commitment to environmental conservation and encouraged collaboration from all parties to preserve Mimika's nature.
"The spirit of collaboration built during this exhibition is proof that we can unite to face challenges, especially the growing waste crisis," said Evert.
Gesang added that PTFI believes big changes start from small steps. Therefore, PTFI continues to commit to making environmental programs an integral part of company operations, while empowering surrounding communities to become active participants in protecting the earth.
"If the environment around our operations can be well maintained and sustainable, company operations can automatically be sustainable. Small actions today will have a big impact on the future," said Gesang.
