13 October 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) was honored once again with a Subroto Award in 2022 from the Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Republic of Indonesia. The award ceremony was held on October 4th 2022, virtually. PTFI earned this award for the category of Most Innovative Minerals Community Development and Empowerment Programs (PPM), sub-category Metal Minerals, in the Sociocultural field, by reason of its commitment to conduct a sustainable operation through the development of human resources near the company operating area.

The Subroto Award is the highest award bestowed by the ESDM Ministry and has been presented five times since 2017. This award is a form of the government’s appreciation for stakeholders who have contributed to advancing the domestic energy and mineral resources sector.

“The Government conveyed our gratitude to PTFI for continuing to show its commitment to develop and empower the Papuan community, especially in the social and cultural fields," said Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, who attended the virtual 2022 Subroto Awards ceremony. The government also hopes that PTFI will continue to demonstrate its leadership as a company that cares about sustainable mining practices in Indonesia.

This is the second Subroto Award earned by PTFI after the company won another award in the category of The Tax Subject with the Biggest Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) Contribution last year. The award was bestowed in recognition of the company's attention to the preservation of local wisdom and culture through the empowerment and development of young Kamoro carvers in collaboration with the Maramowe Weaiku Kamorowe Foundation in Timika.

"This award is a form of appreciation from the Indonesian government which inspires us to continue to work and contribute to the community," said PTFI President Director Tony Wenas. “We realize that no business can succeed amidst a failed community, and it is this spirit that constantly drives us to advance the communities who live alongside with us,” he continued.

For more than 55 years of operation in Indonesia, PT Freeport Indonesia continues to develop sustainable community development and empowerment programs in various fields, especially education, health, and economic independence. PTFI hopes the various strategic program will help to assist the government to achieve the creation of a Papuan society that is more self-reliant and more competitive.

In the education sector, PTFI has established five Papuan Taruna Boarding Schools and provides free access to education for Papuan children from seven tribes in Mimika. In addition, PTFI continues to provide educational scholarships for Papuan children up to the university level in their home country and abroad.

In the health sector, PTFI provides free healthcare services for Papuans through a hospital and three clinics, as well as through the Floating Clinic and Flying Doctor programs to reach Papuans living in remote areas.

In the sector of economic independence, PTFI continued to provide funding for hundreds of MSMEs as well as mentoring program and guidance for Papuans to develop plantation, farming, fishery, and livestock breeding activities.

Meanwhile, the Acting Regent of Mimika, Johannes Rettob, said that from the year of 1992 to 2021, the value of PT Freeport Indonesia's social investment has reached US$1.9 billion. Until PTFI's operating period is completed in 2041, PTFI's social investment is estimated to reach US$100 million annually.

PT Freeport Indonesia will continue to carry out this community development and empowerment program in collaboration with various stakeholders, especially the Mimika Regency government to ensure that the program is sustainable with regional development goals.

"The existence of PTFI has provided a positive impact on the growth of the Mimika region, especially in advancing the quality of Papua's human resources," he said. He said that the Mimika government will continue to support PTFI to be able to operate sustainably and create added value for the Mimika community," said Johannes Rettob.
