Freeport Indonesia Receives 2024 Tamasya Award for Commitment to Quality Education in Papua

29 November 2024

Timika, November 29, 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) received two Mining for People's Welfare (Tamasya Award) awards from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in the Categories of Education Planning and Education Implementation. These awards were presented to PTFI for their excellent Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) performance that has positively impacted the community.

The awards were presented during the Tamasya Award Ceremony held in Jakarta on Tuesday evening (11/26). These awards are given to mineral and coal mining businesses to encourage the utilization of mineral and coal resources in Indonesia for the maximum welfare of society, especially for communities around mining areas.

"PTFI is committed to educational development for the Papuan community, particularly in Mimika Regency. This includes building educational facilities like the Papua Taruna Boarding School, establishing the Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN) Vocational Training Center, and providing scholarships from elementary school to doctoral programs," said PTFI Director & Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma in Timika, Thursday (11/28).

He stated that in 2024, PTFI's social investment fund allocation for education reached Rp 400 billion. These funds are managed by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK) as a manifestation of PTFI's commitment to supporting education in Papua, particularly in Mimika Regency.

Claus explained that the Papua Taruna Boarding School was established by Freeport Indonesia as a school facility for children of the Amungme and Kamoro tribes and 5 other related tribes living around PTFI's operational area. This school features a technology and environment-based educational curriculum.

"We also provide free training for nine months to the Mimika community at the Nemangkawi Mining Institute. The training provided relates to the mining industry with a focus on six programs: Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Operators, Welders, Electricians, Underground Mining Workers, and Plant Mechanics," said Claus.

At the end of the education period, students participate in an internship program at PTFI. Training at IPN is open to local Mimika residents aged 18-30 who pass the selection stages. This program began in 2003 and has graduated more than 4,000 trainees by 2024.

"90 percent of IPN graduates have worked at PTFI and our contractors, continued to higher education, and some work at other mining companies in Indonesia. Some have even reached supervisor positions in companies. This is certainly a pride for us to see our students succeeding in their careers for the nation," he said.

The Tamasya Award is the fourth award received by Freeport Indonesia from the Ministry of ESDM in 2024. Previously, in October, PTFI received two Subroto Awards. The two Tamasya Awards were for Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) performance, and the two Subroto Awards were for Safety, Engineering, and Environmental Protection categories, as well as Most Innovative Mineral PPM Performance.

"We are grateful and proud because this Tamasya Award complements the recognition of all aspects of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and manifests Freeport's commitment to realizing sustainable mining practices," said Claus.
