Gresik, December 19, 2024 – President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Tony Wenas expressed appreciation and recognition to the Firefighting Forces who responded quickly to address the fire at PTFI Smelter's Common Gas Cleaning Plant unit on October 14, 2024.
"The response was very quick and alert, and there was exceptional coordination between various fire units, both from PTFI and other units, so that the fire that occurred on October 14, 2024, could be quickly controlled and extinguished in a short time," said Tony during his speech at the PTFI Appreciation Night for the Firefighting Forces held in Gresik, Tuesday (12/17).
He also expressed his highest appreciation for the support and cooperation of all parties, enabling the firefighting process to be carried out precisely and in an integrated manner, and hoped that this project could soon be fully operational and contribute to the economy of Gresik, East Java, and Indonesia.
Tony explained that in handling the Smelter fire, PTFI's Emergency Response Team, together with several institutions and companies around the PTFI Smelter, worked hard to address this situation. All employees have been confirmed safe with no reported injuries. Employee safety is the company's priority.
Appreciation and recognition from PTFI were presented to the Surabaya Fire and Rescue Department and the Gresik Fire and Rescue Department. The Head of the East Java Provincial Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) Andik Fadjar Tjahjono, representing the Acting Governor of East Java, witnessed the awards ceremony.
Appreciation for cross-institutional cooperation and collaboration in maintaining workplace safety was also given to PT Berkah Manyar Sejahtera, PT Petrokimia Gresik, and Maspion Industrial Estate.
East Java Provincial Satpol PP Head Andik Fadjar Tjahjono welcomed the implementation of this activity. "We appreciate PTFI's initiative in giving special attention to firefighting and rescue personnel, not only recognizing their service but also showing the company's commitment to supporting sustainability and safety where the company operates," said Andik.
One of PTFI's Emergency Response Team members, Eko Budiono, said that during the incident, the team directed employees to evacuate to safe points and ensured no one was left behind. "Additionally, we also inspected the surrounding area to avoid other potential hazards. All teams worked quickly and supported each other. Coordination with external firefighting units also went smoothly," he said.
From this incident, Eko continued, he learned that safety must be the top priority. "Following procedures with discipline really can save lives. This incident made me more aware that danger can come at any time, and we must always be ready. I also came to appreciate more the importance of safety simulations and training," he said.
Eko conveyed his gratitude to PTFI management for the appreciation given. "I personally and the team express our deepest gratitude because while being part of this firefighting force, we feel truly proud and receive quite extraordinary appreciation. Once again, thank you for this event," Eko concluded.
