Freeport Indonesia Wins Award for Sustainable Business Practices

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) won the Sustainable Business Practices Award (SBA) in the Highly Commended Category on June 2, 2022.  Winning the award has now made it one of the 20 companies and the only one from Papua getting recognition for its sustainable practices in the business sector.

The award presentation ceremony was organized by Global Initiatives in cooperation with PvC, the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD) and the Indonesia Business Coalition for the Empowerment of Women (IBCWE). President of the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development, Shinta W.Kamdani, stated that the 10th SBA held in Indonesia was aimed at appreciating companies in Southeast Asia that have shown their commitment to sustainability.

The achievement of PTFI in winning the award alongside several other companies have shown to the global business community their success in implementing sustainable programs in diverse sectors which include community empowerment, good corporate governance and environmental conservation. All SBA winners are expected to inspire other companies to apply sustainability values in their business operations,” Shinta said in a written statement on Monday (6/13/2022).

Meanwhile, President Director of PTFI, Tony Wenas, explained that as an award winner the company has clearly proven to have conducted efforts of sustainability over the period 2020-2021. The recognition given to us reflects the company’s commitment as well as the support from all employees and the community for PTFI to carry out safe and sustainable production. The award reaffirms our dedication to attain the aims of the Sustainable Development Goals including a well-managed environment and the creation of added value in the interest of all stakeholders,” said Tony. In going forward PTFI endorses the implementation of a green economy with a target of reducing gas emissions by 30% in 2030 through the employment of an unmanned electric train in the underground mining area,

In terms of community development programs, PTFI is endeavouring to provide additional value to the communities living in the surrounding areas and the stakeholders through economic, educational, health and socio-cultural contributions that are in harmony and support with the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goals  The achievement of SDGs is a priority for the Indonesian Government in its strife to upgrade people’s welfare and its economy, to maintain the quality of the environment and to facilitate an inclusive development in the context of improving quality of life.

The Minister of the National Development Planning Board, Suharso Monoarfa, who was also in attendance at the award presentation, perceives companies as parties with an important role in implementing sustainability programs, especially in achieving SDGs. “The achievement of SDGs in Indonesia will never succeed without the role and support of the business entrepreneur to expand the implementation of sustainability programs. The Government appreciates award presentations like SBA which has aided the advancement of national sustainability efforts and the entrepreneurs who have consistently supported the Government in achieving national sustainability goals,” Suharso said.
