Co-founder of Freeport McMoRan Inc. James 'Jim Bob' Moffett has died at the age of 82. Tempo.co quoted from Nola.com, a local media based in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, said that Moffett started led his company by merging with the Freeport Minerals Company to give birth to Freeport McMoRan. "Died of complications from Covid-19 on Friday in Austin, Texas," the report reads based on information from Moffett's son.
Moffett and his two colleagues, Ken McWilliams and Mack Rankin, founded McMoRan Oil & Gas Co. in 1969. The company was later transformed into one of the leading oil and gas companies in the United States. In 1981, Moffett also brought his company to begin the process of merging with the Freeport Minerals Company. Thus, Freeport McMoRan was established.
However, long before the merger, the Freeport Minerals Company had established. This company is currently still carrying out activities in the Grasberg Mine, Papua which causes many conflicts with the local community.
Listed at Freeport, Moffett served as Head of the Board from 1992 to 2003. Then, also CEO from 1995 to 2003. In December 2015, he stepped down as chairman and left the company's board. "After good deliberation, the board decided that a change in leadership would be a good thing for the company and policy makers," a company spokesperson said in an email.
