Timika, 5 July 2024 – On Friday (5/7), PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in collaboration with Mimika Regency Environment Office held an event that was the climax of their World Environment Day 2024 commemoration, at the Gedung Eme Neme Yauware hall in Timika.
"Today commemoration of World Environment Day 2024, which is a collaboration between PTFI and Mimika Regency Environment Office comes to a climax. Earlier Freeport held a series of activities to celebrate World Environment Day, beginning on 15 May with a planting action in the Grasberg area, followed by environment-related workshops, contests and competitions, an urban clean-up drive, and release of wildlife into their natural environment,” PTFI Environmental Vice President Gesang Setyadi conveyed.
The climax 0f PTFI’s World Environment Day celebrations that aligns with the theme adopted by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) of Resolving the Climate Crisis Through Innovation and Justice. took place over a period of three days (9 5- 7 July) and consisted of a range of events , including an exposition of environmentally friendly programs conducted by each PTFI division, an environmentally-friendly themed motor parade, a coloring contest, an environmental dance contest, a culinary bazaar, and music performances.
"Through these activities, we call on all concerned to continue protecting our earth and contribute to reduction of global warming. For instance, we could use environmentally friendly modes of transport, conduct vehicle emission tests, and adopt and increase positive habits and practices such as walking instead of using motor vehicles,” he said.
Mimika Regency Secretariat Expert Staff for Economy and Finance, Inosensius Yoga Pribadi on behalf of Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob called on communities to play a part in protecting and improving the quality of the environment. “I urge all of us as residents of Mimika, whether from the government, the private sector, or as individuals or communities, to increase awareness and carry out more real actions, and collaborate to protect and improve the quality of our environment and conserve our environment, specifically in our beloved Mimika Regency, our common home,” Inosensius exhorted.
PTFI Director & EVP for Sustainable Development & Community Relations Claus Wamafma in a press conference said Freeport through its activities aims to deliver a strong message to residents, of PTFI being a partner to the government in protecting and conserving the environment. “PTFI will consistently and constantly protect and maintain the environment, and carry out environmental management undertakings, that is our pledge towards implementing sustainable minerals management,” Claus stated.
