Timika, December 16, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has partnered with four state universities—Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR) Bandung, Sam Ratulangi University (UNSRAT) Manado, and Sriwijaya University (UNSRI) Palembang—in late November 2025, to expand access for Papuan children to leading universities.
"Through our partnership with ITB and UNPAR, Freeport Indonesia hopes that Papuan children receiving PTFI scholarships can achieve their dreams of studying at the top universities they aspire to," said Director & EVP of Sustainable Development at PTFI, Claus Wamafma, in Timika on Tuesday.
He explained that PTFI, together with ITB and UNPAR, signed a Cooperation Agreement for scholarships for Papuan students. Through this partnership, Papuan children receiving scholarships from PTFI will be able to pursue undergraduate studies at both universities. Both parties are also committed to expanding collaboration through research and talent development.
At ITB, Claus continued, Papuan children receiving PTFI scholarships also receive guidance for university admission through the Pre-University Inspiration Class program. In this program, children gain new insights into the world of higher education, science, and technology through academic guidance and early campus environment orientation.
UNPAR Rector Prof. Tri Basuki Joewono stated that through mentoring and collaborative learning, the great potential of the Papuan generation grows stronger and becomes ready to contribute to national progress. Currently, UNPAR has 10 students receiving PTFI scholarships.
"I appreciate PTFI's initiative and all parties committed to building an excellent young Papuan generation. With mentoring and collaborative learning, I believe the great potential of the Papuan generation will grow stronger and be ready to contribute to national progress," said Prof. Tri.
Meanwhile, ITB Director of Education Dr. techn. Ir. Saiful Akbar hopes that educational collaboration does not end with the completion of studies. "Someday, the sons and daughters of Papua can return and help build Papua comprehensively, not just Freeport but the Land of Papua," he said.
Guest Lectures
Senior Vice President of Sustainable Development at PTFI, Nathan Kum, said that collaboration with universities is also being conducted with UNSRI and UNSRAT to strengthen national talent development and eastern Indonesia regional development. The parties signed a Scholarship Cooperation Agreement for 40 students from UNSRAT and UNSRI (20 Papuan students and 20 non-Papuan students). At UNSRAT itself, there are currently 58 students receiving PTFI scholarships.
At both campuses, guest lectures were held on the theme of "Mining & Local Community Development" through the Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN) in Timika, Central Papua. "IPN, established by PTFI, is a vocational education program that integrates technology training with local wisdom approaches to foster leadership and community self-reliance in Papua," said Nathan.
In addition to strengthening partnerships with universities in various regions of Indonesia, PTFI continues to build educational collaborations in Papua. This is realized through partnerships with Papua University (UNIPA) in West Papua Province, hosting guest lectures and knowledgesharing sessions with Jayapura University of Science and Technology (USTJ) and Ottow Geissler University.
PTFI is also actively involved in developing the mining study program curriculum at Cenderawasih University (UNCEN) in Jayapura, Papua. This initiative aims to improve the quality of higher education and prepare young Papuan talent to contribute to regional development and globally standardized mining industry.
On Monday, December 8, 2025, PTFI officially handed over the UNCEN Science and Partnership Center Building, which began construction in 2022. This building features modern, environmentally friendly lecture facilities. Built on 4,800 m² of land with a building area of 2,800 m², this three-story building uses solar panels for energy savings and serves as a hands-on learning facility for students studying Renewable Energy electrical systems.
