Freeport Provides Food Aid for Flood & Landslide Victims in the Tembagapura District

01 September 2023

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) handed over 520 kilograms of basic food aid to victims of floods and landslides in the Tembagapura District. This aid was handed over by PTFI Vice President (VP) Community Relations, Engel Enoch, through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) at the BPBD Rapid Response Team (TRC) Post, SP 5 Timika, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, on Wednesday, August 8.

"We also sympathize with the natural disaster in Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency. After hearing reports from the area, we rushed to prepare basic food aid, which could be immediately utilized according to community needs. We will continue to coordinate with the regional government (Pemda), following developments in the situation and identifying basic needs at the location," said PTFI VP Community Relations, Engel Enoch.

Floods and landslides resulting from heavy rain on August 25 in the Tembagapura District caused three connecting bridges between villages to be cut off. Community gardens along the river bank were also damaged. This makes it difficult for affected communities to get food, drink, and gardens because the access is cut off.

PTFI handed over 520 kilograms of food ingredients in the form of corned beef, sardines, and cooking oil to complement the assistance from the Mimika Regency Government (Pemkab). In total, the assistance is 2.5 tons of food ingredients. The Mimika Regency Government will then distribute this assistance to the affected areas using air transportation.

The head of the Mimika Regency Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, Yosias Lossu, appreciates PTFI's humanitarian assistance to affected communities. "We are grateful to PTFI for helping us deal with challenging situations like today where access to food is crucial," said Yosias.

BPBD Mimika has collected 2.5 tons of assistance from the Regency Government and PTFI. The aid sent in the last three days is 146 kilograms. "Hopefully, the good cooperation between PTFI and the Government in the future can be carried out sustainably, and the assistance we receive can be immediately distributed to help affected communities," concluded Yosias.

Amid the existing situation, PTFI is working with the local government to respond and assist the affected communities. With this synergy, PTFI hopes that this assistance can ease the burden on the affected communities and quickly recover the situation.
