Timika, May 21, 2025 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is committed to preserving the water ecosystem, especially in the areas around the company's operational region, by releasing (restocking) 10,000 barramundi fingerlings and 500 mangrove crab broodstock in the Ajkwa River Estuary, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, on Monday (5/19).
"The purpose of this restocking is to maintain the population of barramundi fish and mangrove crabs and increase the coastal ecosystem population, thereby providing benefits to the Kamoro community residing in the southern coastal area of Mimika Regency. This activity is planned to be conducted annually until 2032," said PTFI's Vice President of Environment, Gesang Setyadi.
He explained that the effort to release these seeds is based on research routinely conducted by Papua University (UNIPA). The research findings revealed an increase in fishing and crabbing activities (overfishing) due to rising demand and population in Mimika Regency.
"This fish and mangrove restocking effort is outlined in the Technical Agreement for Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2023," said Gesang.
Meanwhile, the Chair of the SDGs Center at Diponegoro University, Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, stated that PTFI's efforts represent a strategic step in supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "This activity provides various ecological, social, and economic benefits that directly contribute to achieving SDG 14 (Marine Ecosystem), SDG 1 (Poverty Eradication), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)," he said.
Denny explained that from an ecological perspective, restocking plays a crucial role in recovering aquatic species populations, increasing biodiversity, and helping maintain the balance of coastal ecosystem functions.
Representing the Kamoro indigenous community, Siprianus Operawiri welcomed PTFI's initiative and believes the activity will benefit the community. "We greatly appreciate this activity. With this program, we hope the fish and crab populations can be maintained for future generations. We will also remind fishermen not to catch juvenile fish, but wait until they are larger to have better market value," he said.
Gesang added that PTFI continues to strengthen efforts to preserve the environment and become part of the solution for preserving water resources in Central Papua. "PTFI works closely with various parties and experts to conduct responsible and sustainable mining operations," said Gesang.
