Freeport Repairs Roads Caused by Landslides in Banti Village

02 June 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia, which operates in the Mimika Regency area, helped repair road access, embankments and ditches that connected the Tagabukarat agricultural village with the Tagabera village in the Tembagapura District. Tis road access was previously damaged by landslides due to high rainfall since February 2021. The Vice President of PT FI Community Development, Nathan Kum, in a statement received by ANTARA on Wednesday said that PT Freeport Indonesia has been working on landslide repairs for 21 days started from 6th May 2021, from a cooperation program from various parties in Mimika Regency.

Banti village is located about 5 KM from Tembagapura city, around 250 residents of Tagabera village and Tagabukarat agricultural village were affected by this landslide. At the beginning of the landslide that occurred in Banti village in early March 2021, PTFI received a report from the Community Affairs Department team who had been working in the Banti village area. After coordinating with the Head of Tembagapura District, PTFI's Civil Geotech Team deployed the a team to monitor the location of the damage at the location to monitor the impact and risk of subsequent disasters on road access.

"PTFI is carrying out this infrastructure repair work in coordination with the government through the Tembagapura district head and the village head. Road access that has been damaged and covered in mud along the 1 kilometer long landslide has been repaired so that it can be safely used by residents again," said The Vice President of Community Development at PT FI, Nathan Kum.

According to Nathan, this improvement is the company's commitment to contribute to moving the economy of the community around the company's work area. "This is a collaboration between PTFI, the local government, the community, together with the Indonesian Army (TNI)/Indonesian National Police (Polri) security forces," said Nathan. The work started on Thursday, 6th May 2021 after the Community Affairs Team received a CAT Excavator 330 heavy equipment loan from the Fleet Management Team. The Community Affairs team also conducted an initial study with the Geo Engineering-Civil Geotech Team to conduct aerial inspections and direct inspections  to the field. Of course, the team also carried out internal coordination at PTFI supported by the Tembagapura Police personnel and the Task Force.

Mobilization of employees who get off and get on to Banti using bulletproof buses commonly used by the TNI and Mobile Brigade Corps (BRIMOB) Task Force on duty at Banti. Meanwhile, the Head of Tembagapura District, Thobias Yawame said that this is done in an effort to support the progress of infrastructure development after Banti Village had been abandoned by residents for approximately one year. "We appreciate the active role of the Freeport company in repairing this damage so that this access road can be used again by the people in the area around the company," said the Head of the District. He explained that the road repairs carried out by PTFI in the village of Banti were considered quite useful.

Furthermore, the Head of Tembagapura District added that Freeport had given serious attention to the residents of 3 village in Banti, after approximately one year after the community came down, the situation there was indeed a lot damaged. After the community returned, Banti village received enough attention from Freeport, although not 100 percent but gradually.

The extreme challenges and risks of working in Kampung Banti Medan are the main challenges in doing work in Kampung Banti. Erratic rainfall, limited visibility due to fog, risk of security disturbances, and potential damage to equipment are daily occurrences in this project.

Heavy equipment every 3 days has to go up and down to fill up with diesel fuel at the entrance to the village of Banti. The entrance to the PTFI area is about 7 KM from the construction site. "The work can be completed on time according to the recommendations made by the PTFI Geo Engineering-Civil Geotech Team," said PTFI Community Infrastructure Superintendent, Rolly Nelwan.

The potential for security disturbances has always been a concern of the TNI/POLRI Task Force in charge of guarding the work in Banti Village. The team that carried out the construction of embankments and ditches to drain runoff water under the landslide cliffs were still under strict guard from the security forces of the TNI/Polri Task Force. The head of Banti 2 village, Demi Natkime positively welcomed the infrastructure improvements carried out by the company, such as clearing landslides, building housing for health workers (Nakes), economic assistance, access to electricity, as well as hospitals and schools that were once built by PT Freeport Indonesia.

"Yes, we are greatly helped by Freeport's assistance, which has lowered heavy equipment to repair embankments and roads, this is a daily vital tool for the residents of these two villages. Yesterday the mothers were happy, there was also a prayer of thanksgiving at the church because the road access can be passed," said Demi. It is hoped that PTFI has and will continue to support the local government in various joint recovery activities for Banti.
