Gresik, 1 Juli 2024 – On Saturday (29/6), PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Smelting & Refining commemorated Environment Day 2024 in the village of Desa Manyar Sidomukti, with the planting of mangroves and Casuarina equisetifolia, a plant native to Southeast Asia and better known locally as Cemara Udang. This planting event was attended by 250 employees and local residents.
"This activity embodies PTFI commitment to protect and conserve the environment surrounding our operating area and maintain its verdancy, while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emission and restoring lands in critical condition,” PTFI Smelting & Refinery Environment and Sustainable Development Manager Emily Muteb said in Gresik.
In addition to planting mangroves, this Environment Day commemoration also consisted of other interesting activities such as a “Citizen Science” educational session with the pathfinder or scouts unit of vocational high school SMK Yasmu Gresik, in which 50 participant’s attended. The goal was to boost awareness of the environment among young generations, while at the same time providing practical information on the importance of protecting the ecosystem.
The climax of this event was collective signing of an agreement to protect the environment between Freeport and stakeholders, including Forkopimcam, the local Environment Office, and the Manyar Sidomukti village head, "This is in manifestation of our earnestness in maintaining and conserving a sustainable environment,” Emily said.
In her address, Any Mardiyani from Gresik Regency Environment Office highlighted the current critical climate condition, and stressed the importance of maintaining justice and inclusiveness in tackling environmental issues. "Planting mangroves and cemara udang is one such way in the vital endeavor to reduce greenhouse gas emission and restore lands that have undergone desertification. Mangroves have the ability to store more carbon than other ordinary tropical forests,” Any said.
Manyar Sidomukti Village Head Chasin conveyed his appreciation for Freeport’s initiative. “We highly appreciate this activity and hope such activities will continue to be held towards creating sustainable mangrove ecosystem management,” he said.
This activity that is a collaborative endeavor with environmental NGO Wehasta was attended by the local government’s Environment Office, the Manyar District Leadership Coordination Forum, (Forkopimcam), and local residents.
"Through collaboration and active participation by all concerned, it is hoped such efforts will lead to long-term benefits for residents and the environment,” Emily said.
