Freeport: Structuring of Amdal 2020 in stages is in line with regulations

02 November 2022

Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) claims to have been following the preparatory process to extend the Environmental Impact Analysis Document (AMDAL) in multiple stages in collaboration with the Government and community since the middle of 2020. “PT Freeport Indonesia is always committed to making efforts to operate and to contribute to Indonesia,” said Riza Pratama, Vice President Corporate Communications PTFI in a written statement to seputarpapua, com on Wednesday (11/2/2022).

Riza continued to say that according to Government Regulation No. 27 of 2012 concerning Environmental Permits, PTFI has been composing AMDAL in participation with the Government, with affected communities, with NGO environmental observers and the communities affected by all forms of decisions in the Amdal preparation process, ”The participation process of the community is implemented through the announcement of business/activity plans and in the form of public consultations.

In the process of preparing the AMDAL document, continued Reza, PTFI has conducted face-to face socialization with the community through two stages of public consultation, He mentioned that the first phase of public consultation was carried out in July 2020 with people who reside in 3 highland villages and 5 lowland villages drained by the  river basins of the Kamoro, Ajkwaj Minajerwa and Mawati .(DASKAMM), This process was continued by the second consultation stage that was held om the Hotel Horison and Hotel Grand Mossa Timika in the month of August 2020.

The second consultation was attended by representatives of stakeholders, including affected communities, community organizations LEMASA and LESMASKO, YPMAK, local governments, local and international  NGO’s as well as communities affected by all AMDAL decisions.

PTFI, added Reza, is optimistic that the 2020 AMDAL, prepared by the communities involved can preserve the environment around the company’s operational areas. In future implementations, we will always involve the central government, in this case the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry as the technical ministry that will assist and supervise the implementation of the 2020 AMDAL explained Riza.

PTFI’s statement reacted to the issue of refusal to extend the AMDALwhich was publicly conveyed by Lemasko Chair Gerry Okoare in a statement to reporters at the Rimbia Papua Hotel on Tusday (11/1/2022)

Gerry firmly rejected the extension of PTFI”s Amdal which he said was carried out in an open manner and did not really involve the paerticipation of the two traditional institutions and the affected communities. “We firmly refuse, stop the Amdal first, wait a minute, we haven’t talked yet. We don’t want to, we refuse,” said Gerry.

Gerry’s refusal is not without reason. Instead, he felt he was being “conned” or deceived. The draft Amdal document which is hundreds of pages thick was submitted at the meeting that night. According to Gerry it is very unreasonable for the public to understand the contents of the document in such a short time. Meanwhile, they were brought to Bogor as if they had agreed to the contents of the document. “We are confused, why we only saw this Amdal document tonight. This document as tick as a “holy book” was suddenly held up to read tonight, Don’t try to trick us all the time,” he said.
