Freeport Supports 24 LPDP Scholarship Awardees from Papua in Environmental Projects

09 July 2024

Mimika, 9 July 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia supports 24 Awardees or recipients of the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) scholarships from Papua in undertaking social and environmental projects within the “Kalpataru” project.

“Freeport Indonesia consistently supports the growth and development of Papuan youth through education. We are very pleased that 24 LPDP scholarship awardees from Papua are now preparing to continue their studies,” said Claus Wamafma, Director, Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development at PTFI, in Mimika on Tuesday.

He stated that education is one of the social investments developed by Freeport Indonesia. “We believe education can accelerate development in Papua, ultimately improving the quality of life for the community,” he said.

Yeti Yuniarsih, Chairman of Batch PK-232, explained that the project took place over two days on June 22 and June 29, 2024, with several activities including a webinar on the Food Waste Free Movement attended by hundreds of participants from across Indonesia, an Edutourism Waste Management Social Service, and the planting of 100 tree seedlings as a symbol of life and support for reforestation at the International Islamic University of Indonesia (UIII) in Depok.

PTFI’s support for the Kalpataru project according to the needs of Team PK-323 includes two units of hydraulic truck trolleys, 15 jumbo bags of 1-ton capacity, 35 jumbo bags of 500 kg capacity, and one unit of a 500 kg scale.

The total participants of PK-323 are 301 scholarship awardees, 24 of whom are LPDP scholarship awardees from Papua, consisting of 14 from Papua, two from Central Papua, two from Southwest Papua, five from West Papua, and one from Highland Papua. These LPDP scholarship awardees will continue their studies at the master's or doctoral levels at leading universities in Indonesia, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Yeti mentioned that the Kalpataru project stemmed from concerns about Indonesia being the top contributor to food waste in Southeast Asia, with a total of 14.73 million tons per year (according to UNEP’s Food Waste Index 2024 report). This alarming phenomenon poses significant threats if not addressed quickly, such as significant climate change that could endanger the vital aspects of Indonesian society's economy and health.

“We, PK-232, are committed to addressing the food waste issue from upstream to downstream. The complexity of this problem cannot be solved through conventional means but requires strategic solutions. One way is by connecting several environmentally concerned stakeholders to synergize in achieving a sustainable living environment,” said Yeti.

Claus mentioned that Freeport shares the same vision of contributing to solving environmental challenges. “The issues addressed by the PK-232 project are also one of our priority programs to continue committing to waste management and environmental reforestation. We hope that the support in the form of donated items will be beneficial for the community,” said Claus.
