Freeport Supports Papua Football Academy to Bring Honor to Indonesia at Gothia Cup in Sweden

27 May 2025

Jakarta, May 27, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) proudly supports Papua Football Academy (PFA) in the international football tournament Gothia Cup 2025, which will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from July 13-19, 2025.

This support was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT SKF Indonesia. PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas and PT SKF Indonesia President Director Satheswaran Mayachandran signed the MoU in Jakarta on Monday (5/26).

"Since PTFI established PFA in 2022, PFA players have undergone a rigorous selection process. The PFA Talent Scout Team traveled around Papua to select more than 4,000 children, exploring and honing the best talents to be professionally developed. Now they are ready to compete in the international Gothia Cup 2025. This is a source of pride for Freeport Indonesia," said Tony.

He hopes that through this prestigious event, PFA can bring honor to Indonesia's name in the world's largest youth tournament. "Of course Indonesia would be proud if PFA returns from Gothia Cup 2025 bringing home a gold medal. But what I hope is that the children return home with valuable experience. You will gain valuable experience from competing in an international tournament like Gothia Cup," he said.

Tony explained that PFA's participation in Gothia Cup 2025 represents PTFI's commitment together with PT SKF Indonesia to build a strong foundation for youth football development in Indonesia, particularly in Papua. "I also want to thank PT SKF Indonesia which has supported PFA to have the opportunity to participate in this international tournament," said Tony.

Gothia Cup is a football tournament for youth aged 11-18 years that has been running since 1975 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Gothia Cup 2025 will be a historic moment as it coincides with the celebration of 50 years of the world's largest youth football tournament.

The PFA (U-14) team is selected from the Meet the World with SKF PFA Selection Camp program. PFA becomes the first representative specifically from Papua to compete in Gothia Cup, bringing the spirit of unity and Indonesian pride to the international stage. This PFA team is proof of PTFI's commitment to inclusive youth development in Papua.

PFA Academy Director Wolfgang Pikal emphasized the importance of instilling spirit in players ahead of the matches. "We continue to instill positive values in the players, because they will represent Indonesia, particularly as a symbol of Papuan children's potential, representing PT Freeport Indonesia and representing Indonesian children with pride abroad. We will prepare the PFA team to bring honor to Indonesia's name from Papua," said Wolfgang.

PFA is a Papua youth football athlete development program established by PTFI in 2022 with the goal of producing world-class Indonesian football athletes. PFA also provides formal education and skill development that supports the formation of good character.

PFA has managed 90 students, consisting of 60 active students and 24 alumni who are now active in Indonesia's youth football world. The students involved are in the age range of U-13 to U-16, and currently selection is ongoing in 18 regencies/cities in Papua to find 20 new students who will replace students who have graduated early.
