Freeport to Build Science Building at UnCen at cost of IDR 46 Billion

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) will build a Center for Scientific Research and Partnership at the Cendrawasih University in Jayapura, Papua with an investment of IDR 45 Billion. The concept of the building is environmentally friendly. It will be built on a plot of land belonging to Uncen covering 2,766 square meters. The building was recently inaugurated with a groundbreaking ceremony conducted by the Minister of Investment, Bahlil Lahadalia, Freeport Management and the University’s Governance Body on Thursday (10/6/22).

The building is planned to have three tiers and is anticipated to be completed within 12 months.  Its main purpose is to centralize all human resources in terms of developments of technical matters, in particular related to mineral extraction.  “It’s a great pleasure to me to assist the university by building a modern extension to it for its future advancement,”Richard said on the sidelines of the groundbreaking ceremonials as quoted by YouTube CNN Indonesia on Friday (10/7). Richard as representative of Freeport cherished hopes the building will be functioning and facilitating students in completing their studies.

A similar viewpoint was conveyed by the President of UNCEN, Apolo Safanpo. He said he was hoping the building will provide additional value to all students including the people of Papua. “I do hope this building provides optimal benefits in the interest of the development of the science of knowledge, technology and skills for all Cendrawasi University students including the people of Papua down the road. A student of the Mining Technology Faculty, Jemz Ansaka, was looking forward to the completion of the building. Because with it existence students won’t have problems in conducting research work. In mining technology samples of stones are usually examined outside. We hope once the building is erected actions like these will become more convenient and their related costs will reduce to our advantage, ”he said.

On the same occasion, Minister Bahlil said the Government will continue to intensify efforts to look for investments for Indonesia. These investments, Bahlil said, will be evenly distributed to all regions. Like what Freeport has been carrying out, “The Government will be pushing investments into the regions with collaborations with the aim to let our brothers and sisters who are studying in the region to quickly end their studies and come home where investments are taking place and where jobs are created in order to eventually achieve prosperity for us all,” Bahlil said.

The Central Science and Partnership Building will later have 15 class rooms, one lecturer’s room and one auditorium for 230 people.  Later on top of the building a solar panel will be installed which will become the source for environmentally friendly energy. The construction of the building is part of a social investment program of PT Freeport to which the company allocates an annual social investment of US$ 100 million. Aside from the sector of education the sectors of health, economic infrastructure, culture and sports will also become part of PT Freeport Indonesia’s future investment program.

PT Freeport Indonesia has a labor force of 6.001 workers, compose dof 56% nom Papuan nationals and 2.5% foreign nationals.  Based on available data, PT Freeport Indonesia intends to invest as much as US$ 18.6 billion form 2021 throughout 2041. This capital investment is equivalent to IDR. 270 trillion and includes the investment of a smelter as art of its downstream program. Aside from the construction of the building PT Freeport is also signing an MoU for joint research with Uncen to the amount of IDR 1,5 billion.
