Timika, August 4, 2025 – Thousands of employees and community members of PT Freeport Indonesia from an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level at Ridge Camp, Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, held an "Indonesian Cultural Parade" to welcome the 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.
"The diversity that Indonesia possesses is a strength that must be embraced. Through the Indonesian Cultural Parade, diversity becomes a strong reason that unites PTFI employees and community to respect each other and work together," said Executive Vice President Site Operations/Head of Mining Engineering PTFI, Carl Tauran while watching the parade that took place on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
The Cultural Parade at Ridge Camp carried the theme of miniature Indonesia. Each employee community represented arts and traditional culture from various regions in Indonesia such as East Java, Papua, South Kalimantan, Maluku, to Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, and others. They circled the Ridge Camp area wearing complete traditional costumes with traditional attributes while carrying regional craft arts. Balinese Gamelan music, Reog Ponorogo, the melodious Sape typical of Kalimantan, and other traditional music accompanied each community's performance.
Chairman of the 80th Anniversary of RI Committee at PTFI, Rode Ajomi explained that Ridge Camp is a PTFI operational support area. This 56-hectare area is also home to 12,000 employees from various divisions including Underground Mine, Concentrating, Operations Maintenance, Central Services, and Grasberg Earthworks. Ridge Camp is equipped with accommodation, sports facilities, and shopping areas. The employees come from various regions in Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke with different cultures and traditions, but still respect each other's differences.
"Through this activity, we want to showcase diversity as a symbol of Indonesian unity at PTFI, Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province. We hope this can inspire all parties to continue strengthening unity in diversity. Because this is Indonesia's strength," said Rode.
In this cultural parade, the Mining Safety Division collaborated with the Batak Family Association of Tembagapura (PKBT), interpreting independence with the essence of working productively and safely. They carried "Owlie Ulos" as a cultural safety mascot. Owlie Ulos is a brave and wise Owl wearing Ulos, a traditional woven fabric of the Batak people.
Meanwhile, the Grasberg Earthworks Division collaborated with the Papua Association to present the local wisdom culture of Papuan people with traditional Papuan clothing attributes.
The presence of Noken in the craft exhibition became a symbol that noken weaving is not just about stringing rattan threads into bags. Rather, it is a reflection of togetherness, cooperation, and patience. In sustainable upstream to downstream mining operation activities, Noken represents the embodiment of collective life container and a symbol of national unity.
"I see every employee showing respect and admiration for the differences in ethnicity, culture, and language that exist in the PTFI operation area. This becomes a real picture of Indonesian sovereignty from Papua land," said Grasberg Earthworks Division employee Ida Nekwek.
PTFI, as the world's largest integrated copper mining company from upstream to downstream, also celebrates the 80th Anniversary of RI. Throughout August, PTFI organizes various activities that flow the spirit of nationalism and mutual cooperation at five PTFI work location points, from upstream in Papua—including Tembagapura, Kuala Kencana, and Nabire—to downstream in Gresik, East Java and Jakarta.
In Tembagapura, various competitions and cultural performances are held together with residents of Banti Village. In the Lowlands, Social Service and Village Cleaning activities take place in Ayuka and Tipuka, as well as competitions for children and adults. In Nabire, Free Cataract Surgery is held combined with Free Eye Education and Examination for 1,000 school children. In Gresik, blood donation, Gresik MSME digital training, and Nusantara Copper Melody Concert take place. The culmination is the simultaneous 80th RI Independence Day Ceremony attended by all employees and contractors at five PTFI work location points.
All series of activities are carried out with full spirit of mutual cooperation and togetherness with residents around the operational area. Together with the nation's best sons and daughters, PTFI continues to contribute to the country, running safe and sustainable operations as a form of gratitude for Indonesia's 80 years of independence.
