High Oxygen Demand, Freeport Converts Industrial Gas to Medical Gas

24 August 2021

Jakarta - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is currently finishing a program converting industrial gas to medical gas to meet the medical oxygen needs of COVID-19 patients who are being treated in the Tembagapura hospital and the Kuala Kencana clinic, Papua.

Vice President PT Freeport Indonesia for Government Relations, Johnny Lingga, in Timika on Saturday stated the process of converting industrial gas to medical gas temporarily takes place at the Kuala Kencana Light Industrial Park (LIP) facility. “That is what we presently are engaged in, of course coordinating the matter with the Mimika Health Office and the Mimika Industry and Trade Office regarding the permit. Hopefully it will be produced, shortly,” thus stated Johnny. According to him, eventually the gas plant at Light Industrial Park will be able to generate 60 medical gas cylinders per day.

With such a production amount, he said, it is sufficient to meet the need for oxygen for patients who are receiving treatment at the Tembagapura hospital and the Kuala Kencana clinic. However, should production be more it could support the need for medical oxygen for the Timika Mitra Masyarakat hospital and the Mimika Regional Public hospital.

Johnny acknowledged that the current PT Freeport Indonesia medical oxygen stock to serve COVID-19 patients at the Tembagapura hospital and the Kuala Kencana clinic is used up, and therefore the company is unable to fulfil the requests of both the Mimika Regional Public hospital and the Timika Mitra Masyarakat hospital.

Recently, PT Freeport assisted with 50 (cylinders) for the Mimika Regional General hospital. Furthermore, PT Freeport also assisted with 10 concentrator units, respectively, for the Mimika Regional General hospital and Timika Mitra Masyarakat hospital.

Head of the Mimika Health Office, Reynold Ubra, stated that the need for medical oxygen to treat COVID-19 patients in Mimika is currently very high because more and more patients come to the hospitals with severe to critical conditions.

“Every day the number of patients in the hospitals continue to increase, and thus the need for oxygen also increases. One way to solve the problem is by converting industrial gas to medical gas,” he explained. Presently, there is only one medical oxygen plant in Mimika, which within 12 hours is only able to produce 30 cylinders of medical oxygen.
