06 August 2024

Timika, 6 August 2024 - This year Amungme-Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation YPMAK is dispatching 60 prospective university students comprised of 20 students from the Kamoro Tribe and 40 students from the Amungme Tribe in Mimika, Central Papua to attend a PreUniversity Program in Semarang, Central Java organized by the foundation Yayasan Bina Taruna Bumi Cenderawasih (Binterbusih).

In its capacity of manager of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Partnership Fund, YPMAK consistently develops programs for the AMOR communities, of which one program is for award of scholarships to children from the Amungme Tribe and Kamoro Tribe, and the 5 kindred (the Dani, Damal, Moni, Mee, and Nduga) to continue their education up to the university level.

“We are proud and happy to see Papuan children enthusiastically looking forward to continuing their schooling. Awarding scholarships is one of the ways we endeavor to ensure Papuan children, specifically from the Amungme and Kamoro, along with other native Papuan communities, receive the greatest opportunity to acquire knowledge,” said PTFI Director and EVP for Sustainable Development and Community Relations, Claus Wamafma in Papua, Tuesday.

Claus elucidated, Freeport Indonesia is committed to supporting education in Papua, specifically in Mimika Regency. This year YPMAK has set a quota of 3,000 scholarships to be awarded to eligible children to study at various educational levels ranging from Kindergarten to University, in destination education institutions distributed across Papua and outside Papua.

“Education is vital towards the achievement of a better quality of life. This is what we constantly emphasize to children and their parents. As such children must have the desire and eagerness to learn and study, and parents must encourage their children to further their studies, even to schools outside Timika,” he said.

Meanwhile advisor to the foundation Yayasan Binterbusih, Paul Sudiyo said pre-university education is aimed at academically and psychologically preparing scholarship recipients, to assist them in adapting and to enable them to complete their studies favorably and in a timely manner.

“Scholarship recipients receive various forms of guidance, including in academic fundamentals, character development, and introduction to the local culture. Additionally, through provision of intensive and persuasive guidance and coaching from teachers and mentors, the children are expected to adapt and gain a grasp of the various subjects taught, and to adjust to their new social environment,” Paul said.

In arranging for this pre-university training program, Binterbusih engages and collaborates with universities over the matter of assigning tutors and guidance mentors who meet the needs of the students. Weekly and monthly sessions between tutors and guidance mentors and the children are expected to motivate the children to better adapt to, and experience their learning process.

One scholarship recipient, Yohana Tumuka expressed her happiness at earning a scholarship and allowing her to continue her education. “I am grateful and thankful to God as through this YPMAK scholarship, I am afforded opportunity to study in a university outside Papua, to be precise in Semarang, Central Java. I aim to major in Psychology,” she said.

This Kamoro teenager believes the Binterbusih pre-university guidance program is positive and beneficial, as she will gain opportunity to engage in discussions with other psychology majors at the university, read numerous books and articles on the subject of psychology, and adapt to, and experience a new environment and culture.

“With the knowledge I will acquire, I will be able to assist my parents and primarily other youths in Papua, in particular the Kamoro in Mimika, many of whom enter into marriage at an early age,” she said.
