Kuala Kencana a Restricted City Managed by PT Freeport Indonesia

02 August 2022

Kuala Kencana is a restricted area managed by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and is located within the mining company’s area. Only people in possession of a PTFI ID card, or who already have a specific permit are allowed entry. Summarized from the official website of the Mimika Regency Administration, each vehicle intending to enter Kuala Kencana will be subject to strict and thorough inspection by security personnel at the Timika-Kuala Kencana border checkpoint.

Western-style housing and complete facilities

One of the unique features in the Kuala Kencana District is that the housing in this area doesn’t conform to conventional houses in most parts of Indonesia. As summarized from Kompas.com (2/27/’22), the houses are without fences, complemented by large yards, depicting a western-design building style. Also, the housing arrangement is systematic and orderly as it blends with the natural condition in the Lowland. Several residential complexes of the Kuala Kencana residents include RW A, or Bumi Satwa Indah, RW B, or Tirta Indah, apartment complexes, Bougainville Rd., and the last being the Bachelor’s Quarter.

In addition, Kuala Kencana has complete facilities for its residents. Beside the PT Freeport Indonesia office building and employee’s housing complex, there is also a soccer field, indoor badminton courts, indoor futsal courts, an Olympic-standard swimming pool, a golf course, and even a shopping center. And that’s not all, Kuala Kencana also has public facilities such as schools, a square, church, mosque, beauty parlor, library, restaurants(s) and banking services.

Underground cable system

The development of the Kuala Kencana area has also incorporated prudent planning with the application of underground utilities. Power lines, communication, as well as clean water distribution and sewage treatment are efficiently embedded in the ground. As published by Tribun Timur, Kuala Kencana is the first city in Indonesia to have a sewage system which is eventually routed to the water management center. In addition to that, the underground power cable line in Kuala Kencana is also the first of its kind in Indonesia. This represents an account of the Kuala Kencana District in Papua.
