MIND ID Working on the Environmentally Friendly Downstream Industry

20 July 2023

Mining Industry Holding SOE, MIND ID, continues to be committed to implementing sustainable business programs through its member companies engaged in the mining industry. MIND ID's sustainable business program is in line with the company's main objective of upholding the principles of sustainability with full integrity in providing benefits for a brighter future. "Sustainability commitment is an integral principle in setting the strategy, business objectives, and day-to-day operations of MIND ID and all MIND ID members. We uphold the principles of sustainability with full integrity to ensure that what we manage today can provide sustainable and lasting benefits for a brighter future for everyone," said MIND ID Corporate Secretary, Heri Yusuf in a media statement, Thursday (20/7/2023).

Heri Yusuf said sustainable business programs have been promoted and implemented by MIND ID Group members including PT ANTAM Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero), and PT Timah Tbk. "In line with the government's target to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060, we are implementing sustainable business programs such as working on the downstream of the mining industry through the construction of smelters and others," he said.

Here are some of the achievements that have been made by MIND ID Group members in running a sustainable business: MIND ID Group member PT ANTAM Tbk, shows its seriousness in running a sustainable business through tangible contributions in the form of downstream the mineral industry to support a sustainable economy in the country.

MIND ID Group member PT ANTAM Tbk successfully built the Kolaka Feronikel Plant in Southeast Sulawesi with a capacity of 27,000 tonnes of nickel in ferronickel (TNi). In addition, ANTAM also successfully built the Haltim Feronikel smelter in North Maluku with a capacity of 13,500 TNi. The Haltim Feronikel plant, located in East Halmahera, North Maluku, supports ferronickel production from the Kolaka Feronikel Plant in Southeast Sulawesi with a capacity of 27,000 TNi. With the combined capacity of the two nickel smelters, MIND ID Group member ANTAM Tbk will have an installed ferronickel production capacity portfolio of 40,500 TNi.

MIND ID Group member PTBA is committed to supporting the government's zero carbon emission program by 2060 through a 400 kWp solar power plant (PLTS) on the Bali-Mandara Toll Road. The construction of solar panels is a form of expansion of the transformation of the portfolio of new and renewable energy-based power plants, as well as supporting the national energy transition. The solar panel project is the result of a collaboration between PTBA's MIND ID Group and Jasa Marga Group. Most recently, solar panels have been operating and the electricity generated can be enjoyed by the community.

PTBA has so far successfully built PLTS at Soekarno Hatta Airport in collaboration with PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero). This solar panel has been fully operational since October 2020. The solar power plant consists of 720 solar panel systems, with photovoltaic panels with a maximum capacity of 241 kWp, and is installed in the Airport Operation Control Centre (AOCC) Building. "These steps are taken so that MIND ID through its member company, PTBA has experience in the operation, management, and maintenance of solar power plants. This experience will be beneficial for the company when one day it enters PLTS with a larger scale," said Heri.

To run a sustainable business, a significant contribution made by PTFI is its commitment to downstream mining to improve the economic welfare of the community and increase state revenues.  PTFI is building the world's largest Single Line Copper smelter project located in Gresik, East Java. The smelter is capable of processing around 1.7 million tonnes of copper concentrate per year with the construction process to be completed in December 2023 and start operating in May 2024.

Heri said the construction of the smelter is a downstream program launched by the government following the mandate of Law No. 4/2009 on Mineral and Coal Mining. Another benefit of the smelter will be able to absorb a workforce of around 11,000 workers with a composition of 98 percent Indonesian labor, of which 50 percent comes from the local workforce of East Java.

Meanwhile, MIND ID Group member PT Inalum (Persero) is taking strategic steps to run a sustainable business by accelerating the national aluminum downstream for the prosperity of Indonesia. Inalum accelerated the construction of the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) project in Mempawah, West Kalimantan with a production target of up to 2 tonnes of alumina per year.

MIND ID group member PT Timah Tbk. shows its seriousness in implementing a sustainable business strategy in the downstream sector of the mining industry. PT Timah has consistently made efficiency and effectiveness throughout its business chain through the operation of a new smelter with TSL Ausmelt Furnace technology that is capable of producing 40 thousand tonnes of crude tin per year or 35,000 metric tonnes of ingot per year. TSL Ausmelt is also more environmentally friendly as it applies sustainable technology with Hygiene System and Wastewater Treatment. The smelter will also be able to reduce processing costs by 25 percent compared to using the Reverberatory furnace system.
