Music Performance Held at Freeport Underground Mine Sets MURI Record

07 April 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) was accorded recognition by the Museum of Indonesian World Records (MURI) during the company’s 55th anniversary celebration. This recognition was accorded to PTFI following a music performance held at the deepest location ever, 1,220 meters below ground level. The music performance taking place on the occasion of PTFI’s 55th anniversary adds to MURI records set by PTFI, after previously setting a record for building a Mosque and Church in the deepest location ever, at 1,700 meters below ground level.

PTFI President Director Tony Wenas said the music performance held in PTFI’s Grasberg Block Caving (GBC) underground mining area was by way of the company’s showing its appreciation for employees. PTFI employees were deemed to have succeeded in maintaining productivity amid challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This success was also attributed to increasing production according to plan. "This is by way of expressing thankfulness for the company’s achievement, and at the same time to convey the company’s appreciation to employees. Amid the challenges posed by the pandemic, thanks to the hard work and dedication of all employees, we were able to maintain the company’s performance,” Tony said in a written statement released on Thursday (7/4/2022). "Increased production proceeded as planned while still placing the aspect of occupational health and safety uppermost,” he continued.

Tony added, the challenge faced in running a mine with a high degree of complexity is how to manage such an asset in the best manner possible through safe and sustainable production, such that PTFI can make maximal contributions to the nation and state. PTFI’s underground mine contributed significantly to economic growth in Papua even as the national economy declined amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data from central statistics agency BPS reveal the mining and extractive sectors contributed 40.80 percent of Papua’s economic growth. “We are cognizant of the fact that this excellent accomplishment by Papua was made possible by all stakeholders, including PTFI employees, the Government, and the public who consistently supported our operation in Mimika,” Tony uttered. On this day, Tony Wenas accepted the award from MURI that was personally presented by MURI Operations Director, Ngadri during the occasion of PTFI’s anniversary that was celebrated together with underground mining employees.
