Oxford Teachers to Instruct Amungme-Kamoro Children at Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua Boarding School

27 August 2022

The foundation Yayasan Pendidikan Lokon (YPL) remains committed to providing quality education for Amungme and Kamoro children studying in the Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) boarding school. YPL’s consistent commitment takes the form of increased educational technology and teaching methods.

Increase in the two commitments was demonstrated in the launching of the 'Teachcast With Oxford' program on Saturday (27/8/2022), which was marked by the beating of a tifa drum by YPL Timika Chairman Andreas Ndityomas.

'Teachcast With Oxford' is a teaching method developed by Oxford University Press, UK. This method trains students’ speech capabilities through direct wireless conversations with teachers from the USA.

YPL Timika Chairman Andreas Ndityomas says the 'TeachCast With Oxford' program at the school was initiated under a collaboration between YPL and PT Indomobil Edukasi Jakarta with the aim of educating children and bolstering their confidence to communicate in the English language.

The program is also part of YPL commitment in partnership with the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation YPMAK, which manages the PT Freeport Indonesia partnership fund, to provide proper and correct education, in addition to preparing Amungme and Kamoro children to compete on a global level.

"This is the first 'TeachCast With Oxford' program to be held in Mimika and Papua. It demonstrates Papua is able to provide quality and highly competitive education,” he said.

Andi, as he is familiarly called, said the 'TeachCast With Oxford' will be conducted over a period of five years. The program is assigned for all students from grade 3 primary school to grade 9 in middle school. And 83 instructors and counsellors from the school and the dormitory. “The 'TeachCast With Oxford' program is also intended to lead to bilingual teaching in SATP classes,” he said.

On preparations made to hold the 'TeachCast With Oxford' program, Andi said from the time of launching of the program, various facilities and amenities had been put in place including three rooms designated as ‘moving classes’ as well as stable and reliable internet capacity along with a 70-inch smart television in each class.

"This is a YPL commitment, and as such we made ready the facilities and infrastructure needed. The hope is for Amungme and Kamoro children to acquire a high degree of competitiveness,” he disclosed.

Meanwhile SATP Principal Johana M. M Tnunay added, several preparations were conducted ahead of implementation of the program, such as in-class communication between students and the Oxford teachers to obtain feedback.

Various literature and books were also prepare as supporting facilities for students and teachers. “So, if asked if we are ready, yes, we are ready. Particularly as we already have international classes that instruct the children in the English language,” she said.

Meanwhile in further implementation, Johana said, teacher aides have been readied. As the Oxford teachers do not know the Indonesian language, teacher aides are needed to provide explanations to students. “Through teacher aides, children are helped to grasp the instruction, and the flow of communication in providing the lesson is not interrupted,” she said.

A representative from class IX A, Patresia Bela Kemong expressed her delight in welcoming the 'TeachCast With Oxford' program. "I am very happy, I hope my English language proficiency and fluency will improve with this program,” she said.
