Papuan Athletes Who Won Gold Medals in PON XX Awarded Bonuses Totaling Rp 4.9 billion from Freeport

09 March 2022

PT. Freeport Indonesia has shown appreciation for the Papua men’s football team and Papuan athletes who won gold medals in the recent 20th PON national games by awarding them with bonuses. PT. Freeport awarded a total of Rp 4.9 billion in bonuses to these athletes. The bonuses were presented symbolically at the Otonom Kotaraja office in Jayapura City on Wednesday (9/4).

Rp1 billion out of this amount will go to the Papua men’s football team, with Rp 3.9 billion to be received by PON XX gold medal-winning athletes. “We have appreciated all achievements, endeavors, and enterprises conducted, from training in all sport branches to performance in the actual PON event. It has been a long process that has produced outstanding athletes,” PT Freeport Indonesia Jayapura representative Denny J Rumayomi said on Wednesday.

He voiced the hope that Papuan athletes will continue to develop and produce achievements in further events, and not stop with the PON event. “Therefore, Papuan athletes must not stop their achievements with the PON event but should excel in other events to bring glory to Papua,” he said.

Meanwhile PON XX Papua OC General Secretary Elia Loupatty expressed appreciation for the award of bonuses from PT Freeport Indonesia. Elia divulged the funds were transferred to the PON XX Papua OC bank account in January 2022, with the symbolic presentation only taking place on this day. “We will be transferring Rp 1 billion in its entirety to the gold medal-winning Papua men’s football team, and we will not be deducting a single cent. Further distribution among the team will be left to the (football) team itself, there will be no intervention from us or from PT Freeport," Elia asserted.

He went on to express appreciation for the care and concern PT Freeport has shown for Papuan athletes and for its contribution to sports in Papua. "I believe PT Freeport in collaborating with the Papua government over the PON national games has played a major role, through providing venues in Mimika Regency. And these venues were of international standard and remain well maintained to this day, that is indeed outstanding,” Elia said.

On the same occasion, the 2nd Deputy Chairman of the Papua branch of KONI (Indonesian National Sports Committee), George W. confirmed the funds are in the PB PON XX Papua account. As such they are merely assisting to transfer the funds to the outstanding athletes earning gold medals during the PON. “We will prepare the pertinent data, with the notation that recipients of the money from Freeport remain athletes with potential and are likely to participate in the next PON,” he said. “Those are the ones we will prioritize. We will prepare the data and present it to Freeport to accord with the funds forwarded to the athletes,” George added.

Meanwhile, the coach for the Papuan men’s football team for PON XX, Eduard Ivak voiced the hope that after receiving their bonus, medal-winning athletes will remain motivated to participate in the next PON in Aceh and Sumatra. "PT. Freeport awarding bonuses to these athletes must push them to prepare themselves from now in order to maintain or even increase their achievements in the next PON,” Kaka Edu, as he is fondly nicknamed, said.
