President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), launched the Papua Football Academy at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura Regency on Wednesday (8/31) morning. “And, I requested for a soccer/football academy to be built in Papua, and today it has been realized, which is named ‘Papua Football Academy’, because we know that the Land of Papua has given birth to gifted talents,” stated Jokowi, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel site.

According to Jokowi the Papua Football Academy is a forum for the Papuan children to become soccer legends hailing from Papua Land. Jokowi also mentioned a number of names of soccer players and former soccer players hailing from Papua, who have become regulars of the national team, such as Rully Nere, Yohannes Auri, Aples Tecuari, Alexander Pulalo, Boaz Solossa, Ellie Aiboy, Ramai Rumakiek, and Ricky Kambuaya.

“Want to be like them, these legends? The road is already paved in front of you, (all) my children, namely the Papua Football Academy,” thus stated Jokowi. “Where here, later on in, order to reach achievements the children will be intensely trained in terms of discipline, in terms of routinely training, and constantly accompanied/assisted by coaches of reputable reputation,” he stated.

The former mayor of Solo hopes that the Papua Football Academy will be used accordingly, in order to gain knowledge in the field of soccer. Besides soccer training, the Papua Football Academy also provides formal education, thereby the academy participants are able to continue their schooling/studies.

“We hope that later on (they) will be able to become soccer players possessing a strong self-confidence spirit, solid character, competitive, fair, yet also clever and smart,” concluded Jokowi.
