21 July 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia handed over 20 units of oxygen concentrators to Mimika’s General Hospital (RSMM) and Mimika’s District Hospital (RSUD) on Tuesday. PTFI’s Vice President Community Development, Nathan Kum, said helping the hospitals obtaining the equipment which was in short supply is our company’s commitment in the effort to mitigate the significant rise of Covid-19 cases in Mimika over the last few weeks.

“Freeport is regularly assisting the government and the community in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. Today we handed over oxygen concentrators to RSMM and RSUD Mimika. We contributed 10 units of the needy equipment to the hospitals to treat their Covid patients," Nathan said. He advised Mimika residents, including Freeport employees and those of its subcontractors to follow health protocols at all times like wearing face masks, keeping distance, washing hands, avoiding crowds and reducing mobility and to free Mimika of Covid-19 transmissions.

The oxygen concentrators were handed over by Nathan Kum directly to RSMM hospital director Dr. Joni Ribo Tandisau who expressed his appreciation and gratitude for all the attention PT Freeport Indonesia had given directly and indirectly through the Foundation for the Empowerment of the Amungme and Kamron Communities (YPMAK). “We are in urgent need of oxygen to treat our patients, in particular those suffering from Covid-19.  In all honesty we can only obtain 22 cylinders per day while our daily requirement is 50,” Dr Joni said.

Elsewhere, PT Freeport’s Vice President Government Relations, Jonny Lingga, handed over oxygen concentrators to the Mimika District Hospital’s representative, Syafri, witnessed by HR Manager ISOS Sofia Indradewi. Jonny Lingga said the oxygen concentrators were made in Germany and are very efficient because they are of the portable type and capable of producing 94% pure oxygen to hospital patients.

They are quite costly like Rp. 41 million per unit. PT Freeport had spent about Rp. 820 million on the 20 units. Oxygen concentrators are used to provide additional oxygen to patients suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease / COIPD) but also those testing Covid-19 positive and in urgent need of high levels of concentrated oxygen The advantage of the equipment is to provide additional oxygen to patients with chronic hypoxemia, lung edema and also those testing Covid-19 positive.
