PT Freeport Helps 50 Medical Oxygen Cylinders for Asmat Hospital

20 August 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia provided assistance with 50 medical oxygen cylinders with a capacity of 7 cubic meters to support health services for patients being treated at the Asmat Regional Public Hospital (RSUD), Papua. The assistance was handed over by the VP for Government Relations PTFI, Jonny Lingga and received directly by the Asmat Regent, Elisa Kambu at the Light Industrial Park (LIP) area of Kuala Kencana, Timika, on Friday. Jonny Lingga said that since Covid-19 cases increased in the company's areas, including in Mimika Regency, Freeport's management worked hard to play an active role in providing medical oxygen not only for the needs at Freeport hospitals but also hospitals in Mimika Regency.

"Three weeks ago, the situation was quite emergency, so there were many requests for Freeport to provide medical oxygen. What we did was convert an oxygen factory that previously produced oxygen for industry and then convert it to produce medical oxygen. Through consultation with the Mimika Health Office, finally all of that could be done well," said Jonny. As of this Friday, he said, Freeport had donated 560 medical oxygen cylinders with a capacity of 7 cubic meters to help Mimika Hospital and Timika RSMM.

"Today we handed over 50 oxygen cylinders of 7 cubic meters to support services at the Asmat Hospital and will be filled with 50 empty tubes to be sent to Asmat. This is a form of PT Freeport's commitment and partisanship in efforts to mitigate public health, not only in the company area, but also in Mimika Regency and surrounding regencies which can be reached," he said.

Jonny hopes that this assistance will help in accelerating the handling of Covid-19 patients in Asmat Regency. Asmat Regent, Elisa Kambu was very enthusiastic about receiving medical oxygen assistance from PT Freeport Indonesia. Elisa Kambu, who was elected for a second term as Asmat Regent in the 2020 Regional Head Election, said that from the end of June to the end of July the region was very overwhelmed by the high number of Covid-19 cases, moreover medical oxygen reserves at the Mimika Hospital were reduced or even completely depleted.

Previously, Asmat Hospital always received regular supplies of medical oxygen gas from Timika, which was imported directly from Surabaya through distributors. "The conditions at the end of June to the end of July were really very worrying. We were having a hard time getting medical oxygen gas, while patients who needed medical oxygen assistance increased. We looked everywhere, but all supplies were running out," he said.

About two weeks ago, Asmat Regent, Elisa Kambu visited Timika and then established communication with PT Freeport Indonesia to help with medical oxygen gas to the Asmat Hospital. "We consider this a blessing from God that we never thought before. On behalf of the government and the Asmat community, we thank the leadership of PT Freeport Indonesia," said Regent Elisa Kambu. According to Elisa, the medical oxygen will later be used to help patients being treated at the Asmat Hospital and eight Public health center (Puskesmas) in the area. "As a new district, we in Asmat have very limited infrastructure with a fairly high level of difficulty. However, we continue to struggle to carry out development in all fields. We have just built a new hospital, it has not yet been operated, but now it has begun to be used to treat Covid-19 patients," said Regent Elisa Kambu.
