PT. Freeport Indonesia Improves Health Levels for Mimika Coastal and Mountains Community, Through an Extension of Cooperation Between YPMAK and Pelkesi

30 November 2021

The Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK), which manages PT Freeport Indonesia's Partnership Fund, has renewed cooperation with the Christian Health Service Alliance in Indonesia (Pelkesi) for Region 5 Papua in the Health Program implementation in the coastal and mountains areas of Mimika Regency by signing an extension of the cooperation agreement for two next year by the Director of YPMAK Vebian Magal and the Head of Pelkesi Region 5 Papua, dr. Leonard Sampe Mauli Pardede, Sp.OG (K) at the Horison Diana hotel, Tuesday 30 November 2021.

After the signing ceremony, dr. Leonard or who is familiarly called dr Leo thanked YPMAK for still entrusting Pelkesi to work together to improve the health status of the communities in the coastal and mountains areas of Mimika. "Thank you to the Director of YPMAK and the board of directors who trust Pelkesi Region 5 in carrying out the Healthy Village program. We are grateful for that trust. We will maintain and carry it out as well as rely on God to ask for help so that the implementation can be under YPMAK's vision and mission," said Dr. Leo.

dr Leo admitted that changing people's mindset and behavior regarding a clean and healthy lifestyle is not easy. Sustainability is needed so that there are villages that can be used as role models for other villages. His party will reach villages that are considered not optimal in obtaining health services. "We will continue the previous program. As for villages where there have been changes and the existing health services have been taken over by the government, we will serve villages that have not received health services through the Kampung Program. For example, we will provide health services for mothers and children, infectious and non-communicable diseases and environmental for villages that do not have health services," said dr. Leo.

Meanwhile, the Director of YPMAK through the Head of the Health Division, Hengky Womsiwor said that Pelkesi will run the program that is integrated with mobile clinic services, namely floating clinic activities and mobile doctors. "We will intervene in villages that have been determined by YPMAK after conducting a short rapid survey with the Mimika Regency Health Office, in this case, the Diploma 3 Nursing Study Program," said Hengky.

Hengky hopes that after the extension, Pelkesi will immediately carry out programs that interfere with preventive, promotive activities and do not override curative programs. Hengki also explained that the implementation of this public health program collaborated with the Mimika Regency Government in this case the Community Health Center (Puskesmas) and its subsidiary in the program area. These programs would receive direction from the Head of the Mimika Regency Health Office. Hengky said that YPMAK hopes that the current public health condition will be even better in the future with the implementation of health programs in collaboration with Pelkesi and the Mimika Regency Health Office.

Healthy Village Overview

Health Village or Kampung Sehat is a community health program from YPMAK that aims to improve the health status of the Mimika Regency community, especially in villages in coastal and highland areas that are still difficult to access health services. Interventions will be carried out to prevent and address specific health issues such as nutrition, maternal and child health, infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases, and Community Based Total Sanitation (STBM).

In the program implementation, dozens of Field Facilitators who are health workers will be placed in various villages in Mimika to provide medical and public health services. They are also expected to trigger the village government and the communities to actively participate in efforts of improving their health status.

This program is integrated with the Mobile Clinic, which is also a health program from YPMAK. The Mobile Clinic Program provides health services in areas of Mimika Regency that are difficult to reach, through Floating Clinic services operating in coastal areas and Mobile Doctor services for highland areas.

Some of the services provided by the Mobile Clinic include health services by doctors, examinations at the supporting agnostics such as ultrasound and laboratories, pregnancy tests, and other services such as vaccinations and health education. YPMAK hopes to make it easier for the community to access health services, improve their health status and quality of life as well as contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.
