PT Freeport Indonesia Plants Trees Along the Basin Area of Nambon Village to Rehabilitate the Environment

22 November 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) rehabilitates the basin area in Nambon Village, Kemtuk District, Jayapura Regency to designate the area as a rehabilitation area.

VP for the Environmental Division of PTFI, Gesang Setiadi said there are five rehabilitation locations in Papua Province based on the Minister of Environmental and Forestry Decree concerning the Determination of Planting Locations for the Watershed Rehabilitation by PTFI covering an area of 4,232 hectares.

Gesang said the rehabilitation areas in Jayapura Regency are including, East Sentani, Kemtuk, Waibu, West Sentani, Depapre, Ebungfau, Kemtuk Gresi, South Gresi, Abepura, and Heram Districts.

The rehabilitation area is 594.56 hectares that consist of 4 blocks and 19 plots spread over four villages. Among them are Mamda, Mamei, Nambon, and Kwansu Villages. Previously, PTFI have had the plantation in 2021 in the East Sentani District with an area of 7.5 hectares.

“The determination of the rehabilitation area was jointly carried out by the environmental agency both at the province and regency levels. After that, the Ministry of Environmental and Forestry determine this area as one of the rehabilitation areas. 25 percent of this are planted by fruits that later can be used by the community,” he said in Nambon Village, Kemtuk District, Tuesday (22/11/2022).

The rehabilitation program will run for three years alongside the social empowerment program for the community so that they can maintain the plants. He said 19 working groups have been formed with 291 members from the local community.

Meanwhile, Ondoafi Merap, Martem Samon said previously the planting had also been done but the plants died or were burned by the community since there was no supervision.

“Previously, LIPI planted cashew trees but there was no supervision, they were only given to stay like that and then die. Besides, Kodim also planted ironwood trees but there was no supervision in there, and also was burned by the community,” he explained.

Marten asked PTFI to supervise the planting so it can be successful and enjoyed by the community.

“I asked for permanent and freelance employees to monitor this area. However, within three years, this plant has not been able to bear fruit. Rambutan, for example, compared to neighboring areas where wet soil can grow, but this is barren land, so it must be taken care of continuously," he said.

Marten also added that shade trees should be in place to protect the newly growing plants. "For example the Gamal tree. This Gamal tree is one of the trees that can help the growth of other trees. So far, we have studied it like that, or the Lantora Tree," he explained.
