PTFI and Partners Celebrate Christmas with 2,000 Children in 8 Coastal Villages, Head of MTJ District Becomes a Santa Claus

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and several of its partners, namely the Timika Diocese and the Regional Government of Mimika Regency (District and Village), visited eight villages on the south coast of Mimika Regency (Omawita, Fanamo, Otakwa, Ayuka, Tipuka, Nawaripi, Nayaro, and Koperapoka) to celebrate the 2022 Christmas with the children living in the village. The activity was held from 13 to 23 December 2022.

The activity consisted of a visit by Santa Claus who traveled around and distributed Christmas gifts for children in eight villages under the auspice of PTFI. More than 2,000 children received Christmas gifts and took part in the activity enthusiastically. The activity started in Omawita - Fanamo Village, Far East Mimika District and ended with a visit to Nayaro Village, Mimika Baru District.

Regarding the activity, PTFI Community Empowerment Program Manager, Yohanes Bewahan explained that this activity had been conducted for 3 years since 2020. The activity was part of PTFI's effort to share the joy of Christmas with the children of the supported villages.

Yohanes Bewahan also explained that the purpose of this activity was to build and strengthen partnerships with the Village Government, District Government, and the Churches through the Timika Diocese as PTFI's partner, as well as providing an education program through a campaign on the importance of schools for the children participating in the Christmas activity together with accompanying parents.

This series of activities has also become one of the closing series of various Christmas activities and assistance in the supported villages. As a representative from PTFI, Yohanes Bewahan conveyed an appreciation for the support and cooperation from the Village Government, District, and program partners, especially the Timika Diocese in realizing this cheerful Christmas activity. Bewahan also expressed his hope that the activity will be part of mutually reinforcing relationships that have been going well between PTFI and its partners as well as able to bring the joy and happiness of Christmas to the children in the village.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Mimika Far East District (MTJ), Julius Katagame, S.Sos, who was directly involved in accompanying the visits to Omawita-Fanamo and Otakwa by playing a part as Santa Claus, expressed his gratitude to the PTFI SLD Team for the various activities and programs carried out on the coast region, particularly in the Far East Mimika District.

Katagame stated that this Christmas visit is a year-end closing program that is always anticipated by the children in the village. Therefore, he offered an appreciation for PTFI which not only put attention concerning programs for community empowerment but also conducted an effort to reach children's groups which were carried out at the moment of Christmas commemoration day which brought plenty of happiness for the children. The Head of the District also hoped that there will be future collaboration and support between each other apart from the ongoing programs as well as programs for children's assistance.

The Merry Christmas visit program is also one of the events in a series of activities to commemorate PTFI's Christmas Day in addition to internal activities as well as various activities for the community living in the Highlands, Lowlands, and Coastal areas that are scheduled to have been concluded, are currently being conducted and will be held in the future.
