PTFI-Mimika Government Discusses Collaboration Strengthening Health Infrastructure at Waa Banti Hospital

15 November 2024

TIMIKA, November 15, 2024 – The Mimika Regency Government and PT Freeport Indonesia are inviting companies and traditional institutions to participate in supporting the strengthening of health infrastructure at Waa Banti Hospital, Tembagapura District.

This was conveyed by the Acting Regent of Mimika, represented by Regional Secretary Petrus Yumte during the 7th multi-stakeholder partnership dialogue Para-para SDGs Timika No Komen (PaSTi Noken), in Timika, Wednesday (13/11).

"Freeport and the Mimika Regional Government are two major engines in the context of sustainable development in Mimika. Joint collaboration has been carried out to discuss strategic issues and all parties can take their respective roles," he said.

Senior Vice President of Sustainable Development PTFI Nathan Kum said that the construction of Waa Banti Hospital represents PTFI's commitment to providing health services to communities around the company's operational areas.

"With the key role of the Mimika Government and PTFI's support, Waa Banti Hospital can provide modern and better health services that are easily accessible to people in Waa Banti Village and its surroundings," Nathan said.

Waa Banti Hospital services were suspended during 2017-2020. This resulted in communities in Banti Village and surrounding villages being unable to access health services. Since 2022, PTFI has provided significant support to help Waa Banti Hospital resume operations, including contributing materials, labor, healthcare worker transportation, generators, and water supply. The hospital then reopened in August 2023.

"Waa Banti Hospital has become a role model, due to the role of government, Freeport Indonesia, and community involvement, and we must appreciate this together," said Mimika Health Department Head Reynold Ubra.

Reynold said that although located in a remote area, Waa Banti Hospital is equipped with general outpatient, surgery, pediatric and obstetric facilities, 24-hour emergency room (ER), inpatient care, laboratory facilities, ambulance, and operational vehicles.

Hospital Director Dr. Anita Sanjaya said that Waa Banti Hospital plays a strategic role in providing health services to communities in Banti I, Banti II, Opitawak villages, and several surrounding villages in the Mimika highlands.

As a type D hospital, Waa Banti Hospital accommodates the community for basic disease treatment. Since operating from August 2023 to October 2024, there have been 13,524 patient visits, including 526 inpatients and 1,200 ER patients.

"Then for delivery services, during one year there were 33 mothers giving birth. The existence of this hospital can reduce incidents of home births or births in other places," said Anita.

For Tembagapura District Head Thobias Yawame, the presence of Waa Banti Hospital is an answer to local community health services. "This has become a hospital in a remote mountainous area. Both personally and as the Tembagapura district community, we are proud of the presence of this large hospital in Waa Banti. The services are also for communities around Waa Banti, so people can maximize the use of health service facilities," said Thobias.

This first multi-stakeholder partnership dialogue in Timika adopts the slogan PaSTi NoKen, which stands for Para-para SDGs Timika No Komen. The philosophical meaning of PaSTi NoKen is derived from Papuan local wisdom, meaning to discuss all matters concerning shared goals and commitments.

Meanwhile, "NoKen" takes from the local cultural context, serving as a vessel for agreements to be followed up together in the spirit of partnership and collaboration.

The SDGs partnership with the Mimika Regency Government, coordinated by Mimika Bappeda together with PTFI and other non-governmental stakeholders, has been ongoing for four years. This multi-stakeholder partnership dialogue is routinely held each quarter, addressing various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This 7th edition of PaSTi NoKen involves various parties, including the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Mimika, Mimika Health Department, Waa Banti Hospital, village heads, PTFI partner companies and contractors, state-owned enterprises, communities, associations, NGOs, and academics.
