(TIMIKA) 19-06-2024 TIMIKA 20–6-2024 Towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Mimika Regency Government in conjunction with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and partners held the Parapara SDGs Timika (PaSTi) No-Komen (NoKen) partnership dialog forum titled “Garbage Management and Environmental Awareness in the Context of Sustainable Development”, at Hotel Swiss-Belinn Timika, on Thursday (20/6/2024).
Israel Rainer from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department conveyed efforts made by PTFI to manage industrial wastes resulting from office activities and domestic waste and garbage produced in households as well as offices in the PTFI operating area, at Grasberg in the highlands, and in the lowlands.
In addition to processing wastes in conformance with environmental standards, PTFI actively implements environmentally friendly garbage management practices, one of which is the utilization of garbage as nutrients.
“Leachate from garbage is reprocessed into liquid compost, to be used as plant fertilizer in gardens and parks in Kuala Kencana City,” Rainer revealed.
A spirit of mutual cooperation has been forged between PTFI and its partner PT Sandvik, to tackle industrial waste consisting of the packaging used for drilling machinery and heavy equipment. “Our used drill rod spacers that become waste are transformed into paving blocks for pedestrian areas and rest areas,” PT Sandvik Environment Health & Safety Manager Anang Krisnocahyo disclosed.
Garbage management cannot succeed without the benefit of support from the community and their responsible actions. Building community awareness for maintaining cleanliness and soundness of our environment plays a vital part in garbage management efforts in Mimika Regency.
PTFI Environmental Department together with Mimika Regency Education Office and Environmental Office are actively providing education early on to students, through a Nature Conservation Program. This program has been in place since 2008 and has engaged 758 middle school (SMP) students in Timika as Environmental Ambassadors. “Through the Nature Conservation Program and provision of environmental education in schools, we have succeeded in helping schools in Timka to earn the Adiwiyata Award at the provincial as well as national levels,” PTFI Environmental Department Superintendent Emilia Ubra said.
The local government is similarly committed to undertaking garbage management and building environmental awareness. Mimika Regency Environmental Office’s Garbage Management Section Chief Aris Sampe Mambulu divulged the organic garbage management strategy employed by the regency aligns with PTFI’s garbage management. “We replicate the organic garbage management PTFI employs, of utilizing organic garbage for household compost,” Aris said.
Kuala Kencana District Head Yemi Gobai said, “Management of Kuala Kencana City employs highly modern methods, including in relation to garbage management and work safety. I plan to have Karang Senang Subdistrict replicate Kuala Kencana City’s management in its jurisdiction to serve as a model for other districts in Mimika Regency.
About PaSTi Noken SDGs
The first multi-stakeholder partnership dialog held in Timika adopted as its slogan, PaSTi NoKen which is an abbreviation of Para-para SDGs Timika No Komen. The philosophy behind PaSTi NoKen is derived from Papuan local wisdom, signifying the need for discussion and consultation of all matters relating to common goals and commitments.
Whereas “NoKen” is used in the context of local culture, as a receptacle for consensuses reached, to be subsequently followed through in the spirit of partnership and collaboration.
SDGs partnership with the Mimika Regency government, which is coordinated by Mimika Bapenda in conjunction with PTFI and other non-government stakeholders, has been in place for four years.
This multi-stakeholder partnership dialog forum is held routinely every quarter, with various SDGs raised in discussions.:
