Gresik, 20 October 2024 – On Friday (18/10), PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) President Director Tony Wenas conducted an inspection of the fire incident site at the PTFI Smelter’s Common Gas Cleaning Plant in the Gresik Special Economic Zone area.
“I went to personally check on the latest situation at the fire incident site. At this time, we are focusing on assessing a smooth process and carrying out comprehensive evaluation to ensure a similar incident does not recur,” Tony stated after the inspection. He was accompanied by Chief Mine Engineer Carl Tauran and Executive Vice President of Corporate Planning & Business Strategy Horst Garz.
Tony noted several significances from this incident. The first was on the aspect of safety. This is top on the mandatory list of values the company expects all PTFI employees and contractors to uphold, namely Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect, Excellence (SINCERE). He was thankful all employees and contractors upheld and implemented the Safety guideline, thereby ensuring no fatalities or injuries ensued from the workplace incident.
“In this incident no employee sustaining injury was reported. This is something we most assiduously maintain, and this safety aspect was able to be well implemented so that there was no injury or fatality. This indicates we are resolutely implementing safe working standards at the smelter,” Tony said.
Secondly, in early 2024 PTFI conducted all commissioning phases, running tests numerous times and completing the trial and error stage over a span of several months beginning in June, to ascertain the PTFI Smelter operates safely and optimally.
“This means we conducted each stage meticulously, taking into account everything. As a result of this incident Freeport Indonesia will be conducting comprehensive evaluation to ensure there is no recurrence,” he said.
Third, Tony expressed appreciation for the successful efforts made to deal with the fire, which efforts are not dissociated from the hard work and swift and spot-on actions by the PTFI Emergency Response Team. “All teams worked in excellent coordination, acting in union as One Freeport, including teams from Gresik, Papua, and Jakarta, to fight the fire and bring it under control within a short time,” he said.
He went on to voice the highest degree of appreciation for the support and cooperation demonstrated by all parties such that the fire was able to be subdued rapidly and in a consolidated manner. In total, 45 individuals were engaged in the firefighting effort, comprising members of the PTFI Emergency Response Team, as well as firefighting teams from the Gresik Regency government, the Surabaya City government, the East Java Province government, Petrokimia Gresik, JIIPE, Maspion Industry Area, and all security forces.
Fourth, in ascertaining the post-fire condition of employees, PTFI provided special counseling with psychologists. The employees concerned are those who were present on site during the incident. “By means of intensive assessment and counseling, we aim to ensure they feel safe, comfortable, relaxed, and well ready to return to work,” he said.
“I expect evaluation to proceed swiftly and accurately so that the PTFI Smelter operation can resume. This is crucial not just for PTFI, but for the nation as well,” he stated.
“Gate of Deliverance”
In addition to conducting inspection of the fire incident site, Tony Wenas officiated at the opening of the Masjid Babussalam mosque located in the PTFI Smelter area. The mosque, signifying and named a “Gate of Deliverance/ Safety”, has an occupation capacity of 1,000 attendees, and is a worship facility built by Freeport Indonesia for employees and contractors.
“The opening of Masjid Babussalam, which signifies a ‘gate of deliverance’ (‘pintu keselamatan’) embodies PTFI’s placing importance in safety, in alignment with the company’s SINCERE set of values,” Tony explained.
In closing his address at the mosque’s opening, Tony expressed the hope that Masjid Babussalam would serve not only as a place of worship for employees but would also offer space for consolidation and positive spirit within the workplace and boost the qualities of individuals such that all employees continue to strive in the interests of Freeport Indonesia and the nation of Indonesia. "Congratulations on the opening of Masjid Babussalam, may it bear blessings on all of us here,” he said.
